Spread Law Foundation | Legal Awareness Workshop

Outlook Magazine | 24 September 2026

It was a privilege to conduct a Legal Awareness Workshop for the journalists of Outlookindia today under the aegis of Spread Law Foundation.

The session by Advocate Sumit Nagpal, titled Copyright, Media Law & Intellectual Property Rights, was conceived as a practical briefing for journalists, editors and production teams on creating, using and publishing content with due regard to the law.

We examined the IPR map for a newsroom, covering copyright in text, photographs, video and graphics; designs and distinctive visual presentation; confidential and embargoed material; and passing off as well as personality rights.

The interaction was particularly vigorous. Participants raised a large number of precise and well-considered questions on copyright law, the implications of artificial intelligence for newsroom practice, and the principles of defamation law. The quality of the discussion reflected the seriousness with which the Outlook editorial team approaches these issues.

We are grateful to Mr. Neeraj Thakur, Editor, Outlook Magazine for the invitation and for the opportunity to engage with working journalists on matters that arise daily in their professional lives.

Spread Law Foundation remains committed to strengthening legal literacy among media professionals.

Spread Law Foundation was honoured to conduct a legal awareness workshop on copyright law for artists, filmmakers, actors and other creators at the 19th Global Film Festival Noida (16–18 September 2026), at Marwah Studios, Film City, Noida. We thank Mr. Sandeep Marwah, President of AAFT for inviting our Founder Advocate Sumit Nagpal to take this session.

The session, organised in association with the festival and the International Film & Television Club, addressed a question every working artist eventually faces: copyright arises the moment an original work is created — so why register at all? The workshop explained subsistence and exclusive rights under the Copyright Act, 1957; ownership on a film set; moral rights and performers’ rights; Form XIV; and the practical value of a dated entry in the Register of Copyrights when a licence, an injunction or a dispute is at stake.

Spread Law Foundation is dedicated to spreading legal awareness across India through workshops, training and public education. We thank the organisers, the co-speakers on the dais, and the students and professionals who filled the hall and stayed with the discussion.
Protect the work. Then be able to prove it.

It was an absolute honour to conduct a Spread Law Legal Awareness Workshop at the prestigious India Today Media Institute In this session on "Demystifying Copyright", the speaker Advocate Sumit Nagpal not only broke down the intricacies of Copyright Law — its principles, real-world applications, and importance for media professionals — but also covered the foundational basics of law that every journalist should know: The session was filled with insightful discussions, thoughtful questions, and wonderful energy from the bright, aspiring journalism students. Teaching future storytellers about their legal rights and responsibilities felt incredibly meaningful — because informed journalists create more powerful, ethical, and impactful stories.

We are grateful to India Today Media Institute for this wonderful opportunity to contribute towards building legal awareness among the next generation of media professionals.

Knowledge shared is knowledge multiplied.

Let’s keep spreading legal literacy, one workshop at a time!
