: Selling alone meant low prices & uncertainty

For 95 Women farmers households of Maa Sarbamangala Producer Group, Malibisali, Nandigaon GP, Dasamantapur Block, Koraput, brinjal farming was once difficult and risky.

Through the APC Program facilitated by CYSD, farmers came together to cultivate 58 acres using Package of Practices, natural pest management and better crop planning. Their collective effort turned production into a stronger livelihood. The group collectively marketed 80 quintals of brinjal worth ₹1.12 lakh, including 30 quintals worth ₹42,000 through Dangarrani Farmer Producer Company Limited. Better aggregation, market linkage and reduced marketing costs improved their bargaining power.

Today, the group is inspired to expand collective farming and motivate more farmers to adopt agro-ecological practices and organized marketing.

Some days, the land feels silent, and so do the dreams of those who depend on it. But 15 women in Mentry village, Nabarangpur, chose hope over hardship.

With support from CYSD's APC Project and free marigold seedlings from the Horticulture Department, they revived 8 acres through natural farming using only cow dung. Higher yields and lower costs changed their lives.

Inspired by their success, 42 farmers now cultivate 23.5 acres of marigolds together, showing how women-led, climate-friendly farming can transform communities.

Every child deserves the opportunity to grow with confidence, leadership, and essential life skills. Prepared youth volunteers to create safe, engaging, and interactive learning spaces where students can strengthen communication, critical thinking, decision-making, and self-belief, inspiring them to become future changemakers.

Participants shared that the experiential learning methods, group activities, and mentoring sessions enhanced their confidence and facilitation skills. They now feel better equipped to connect with students, lead meaningful classroom sessions, and create a lasting impact in schools.

Held on 21–22 July 2026, the ULLAS Training of Trainers brought together 29 volunteers from four zones under Mission Samriddhi. Facilitated by Ms. Suvarchala, the programme equipped volunteers with communication, leadership, facilitation, and interactive learning techniques, enabling them to reach 1200 of school students across Odisha.

Prosperity Through Climate-Smart Farming 🌱

A few years ago, Saraswati Palei of Keonjhar, Odisha could only cultivate a small patch of land due to uncertain irrigation.

In 2022, everything changed. By joining a Producer Group under the APC Programme (supported by CYSD) and leveraging the State Horticulture Scheme, she established a 1-acre Thai Pink guava orchard. An OAIC solar pump soon secured reliable, eco-friendly irrigation.

The Impact Today:

Income Boost: Harvests 70–80 kg of guavas, earning ₹8,000–10,000.

Empowerment: Gained financial independence and resilience against climate uncertainties.

Community Ripple Effect: Inspired 4 neighboring families to adopt sustainable guava farming.

Proof that when targeted support reaches the right hands, one farmer's success can transform an entire community! 💚

🌱 Pre-Monsoon Dry Sowing: Reviving Soils, Strengthening Farmers

Across South Odisha, Pre-Monsoon Dry Sowing (PMDS) is transforming agriculture through Natural Farming across 180+ acres in the undivided Koraput region. Before the monsoon, farmers sow 15–18 diverse crops to make the best use of early rainfall, creating healthier and more resilient farming systems.

Project Sankalp was launched by the Collector of Mayurbhanj on 21 July 2026, in the presence of district and block officials and PRI representatives.

Implemented by CYSD with support from HDFC Parivartan, the initiative will transform 20 villages across 5 GPs of Thakurmunda Block by strengthening climate-resilient agriculture, irrigation, women-led enterprises, digital education, and local livelihoods to reduce distress migration.

Sikabeda's Green Leap: From Wasteland to Sustainable Livelihood

In Sikabeda village of Anandapur Block, Keonjhar, 7 farming families transformed 4.3 hectares of degraded fallow land into a productive agroforestry model by planting 1,600 lemon saplings. The intervention introduced solar borewell irrigation, protective fencing & intercropping with turmeric, brinjal, chilly & beans, alongside eco-friendly Natural Pest Management.

The initiative has restored degraded land, reduced soil erosion, improved water availability, strengthened biodiversity, and created year-round livelihoods. Families are now earning from multiple crops, reducing seasonal migration and building long-term income security showcasing a scalable model of climate-resilient agriculture. This transformation was made possible through the collective support of DMF Keonjhar, the Department of Horticulture & CYSD WADI Project.

From Barren Slopes to Thriving Orchards: Jumei Leads the Way 🌱

Jumei village in Saharpada Block, Keonjhar, has transformed 9 hectares of degraded fallow land into a thriving agroecological landscape through convergence with the District Mineral Fund, the Horticulture Department (Block & District) & MGNREGA.

With 21 families voluntarily sharing their land, 21 beneficiaries planted 1,676 cashew saplings, reducing soil erosion, improving water retention, and restoring land health. Natural Pest Management using Jeevamruta, Handikhata, Neemastra, and Dasapatrika, along with turmeric intercropping, has enhanced biodiversity and created sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Once barren and erosion-prone, Jumei now stands as a model of community-led natural resource management, where families are beginning to reap long-term environmental and economic benefits.

When Care Reached Every Doorstep

For many women in Sikharchandi Slum, health concerns remained unnoticed until CYSD's Para Medical Volunteers began regular door-to-door visits. Through health screenings, counselling, referrals, and community awareness meetings, women received timely care and life-changing guidance.

Today, women like Bhavani, Dallamma, Anjana, and Puspa are managing their health with confidence, proving that accessible community healthcare can save lives and restore dignity one household at a time.

The Future Needs Better Storytellers :

On World Population Day 2026, CYSD's Demographic Intelligence Unit (DIU), in collaboration with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Odisha, brought together digital creators, podcasters, radio professionals, and social media influencers to explore the human stories behind demographic transition.

Moving beyond data and myths, the dialogue examined how changing families, migration, population ageing, and evolving aspirations are reshaping society and why storytelling is essential to building public understanding.

One question echoed throughout the session:

"If stories shape how society thinks, what stories are we choosing to tell about our changing population?"

The dialogue reaffirmed that numbers alone are not enough. Without a humanitarian lens, data can describe change but cannot explain its human meaning. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, an aspiration, and a lived experience.
