Volunteer Laois

Volunteer Laois Laois Volunteer Centre is a new service in County Laois. Volunteer Laois has been set up as part of the Local and Community Development Programme (LCDP).

We are a registered charity which aims to connect non profit organisations and people to create volunteering opportunities for the benefit of communities and individuals. This programme is designed to counter disadvantage and to promote equality and social and economic inclusion. The programme works with unemployed people, older people, young people, one parent families, people with disabilities,

low income families, travellers and volunteers. The LCDP Programme, which encourages partnership with social inclusion groups, agencies and communities, has four main goals:

•To promote awareness, knowledge and uptake of a wide range of statutory, voluntary and community services.

•To increase access to formal and informal educational, recreational and cultural development activities and resources.

•To increase the work readiness of people to enter the labour market.

•To promote engagement with policy, practice and decision-making processes on matters affecting local communities

•Volunteer Laois staff will contact all volunteers and organisations within 24 hours of online registration.

Join the Irish Volunteering Index! We aim to gain an understanding of what is happening in volunteering across communities. This research into engagement and volunteering highlights what is already going well, but also where the priorities lie for the coming years.

We'll send you a survey for your volunteers to take and you'll get organisation-specific data paired with national benchmarks.

Changing Gears course will be running at Portlaoise Library this November and December.

Changing Gears is an in person course, which supports people in dealing with transitions or significant life-challenges (retirement, bereavement, job-loss, ill health, becoming a carer, relationship breakdown) in mid to later life. Its aim is to help participants to identify what has served them well thus far in life, the successes and challenges they have experienced, what supports they have in their lives and what they may need to put in place, and/or discard, for the next stage of life. It takes place over five weeks and is a facilitated group experience that uses a blend of personal reflection, worksheets, and small group sharing, in a safe environment. Flyer attached with further information.

Venue: Portlaoise Library, 23 Main St, Maryborough, Portlaoise, Co. Laois R32 N7EP
Dates: Wednesdays 4, 11, 18, 25 November and 2 December 2026
Times: 10.30 - 13.00 (Refreshments will be provided)

Please note that this course has been funded by the HSE and is free of charge. Participation requires attendance at each of the five sessions.
