๐Ÿ’ง From the Dijle river to the shower!

We are not just talking about water, we are talking about an innovative, clean way to heat homes and produce hot water.

The Flemish co-housing community at the Rotselaar watermill has recently installed an aquathermal energy system, thanks to the Interreg NWE project. Powered by the mill's own turbine, the system provides 100% clean, locally generated heating, shielding residents from fluctuating energy prices.

How does it all work?

Take a look at this infographic ๐Ÿ‘‡ - as clear as water.๐Ÿ’ง

Ballyhoura Development was delighted to support the promotion of the SoilCrates Living Lab at the Limerick Show.

The event was a great opportunity to highlight the development of the Living Lab and promote soil literacy through practical demonstrations from the Farmersโ€™ Toolbox.

These simple tests help farmers better understand the condition and health of their soil, supporting better decisions on the farm.

A fantastic evening in Mitchelstown for National Heritage Week, with over 90 people attending across our two Carved in Stone: Preserving a Communityโ€™s Heritage events.

The evening began at Saint George's Mitchelstown with Irish Names in Canadian Stone: A Transatlantic Heritage, presented by Patrick Leahy and Irish archaeologist John Tierney.

The presentation explored the remarkable story of Irish families from the Cork, Limerick and Tipperary borderlands who emigrated to Canada as part of the 1825 Robinson Emigration, with many settling alongside one another in Douro Township, Peterborough County, Ontario. Their stories, family connections and enduring links with home remain quite literally carved in stone.

The evening then continued at Brigown Graveyard with Gone Underground: A Heritage Preserved, exploring the local stories, burial traditions and community heritage preserved within this historic site.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, to Patrick and John for sharing their knowledge and research, and to Saint Georgeโ€™s Mitchelstown for hosting us in such a wonderful venue. Thanks also to everyone who contributed to making the evening such a success.

The events formed part of National Heritage Week 2026, with research supported by the Royal Irish Academy.

Ballyhoura Development CLG is launching Ballyhoura BioLoop, a new โ€˜food to fuelโ€™ pilot creating micro-circular economies across three locations in the Ballyhoura region of South East Limerick.

At the heart of the pilot is a community-led approach. Using MyGug anaerobic biodigesters, food waste is transformed into biogas for cooking and liquid fertiliser for gardening โ€“ connecting community tourism businesses and community kitchens with local Tidy Towns groups and creating benefits that flow back into the community.

The first demonstrator site will launch at Deebert House Hotel, Kilmallock, in partnership with Kilmallock Tidy Towns, who will benefit from the liquid fertiliser. Learning from the demonstrator will support two further biodigesters in the region in early 2027.
