Want to learn how to grow your own food while caring for the planet? 🌍🌿 Join us at Doon Social Farm for 8 weeks of practical, hands-on organic gardening.

🌿 Biodiversity Summer Camp starts tomorrow! 🐐🐔🌼

Our first camp kicks off tomorrow, and we can't wait to welcome everyone for three days of outdoor adventures, animal encounters and nature-filled fun! 🌱

If your child is missing out this week, don't worry—there are still a few spaces available for next week's camp, but they're filling up fast!

The beautiful dry spell has been challenging for wildlife and people on the farm. When the temperature dips into the high twenties many plants reduce their production of nectar, an essential fuel for insects. But nature provides and along the shady wetland walk tall thistles have been in bloom for the last few weeks.

Butterflies like the large white have been busy sipping on the nectar from the flowers. The thistles abundant white fluffy seeds are an important source of food for charms of goldfinches. These colourful and musical birds bring a touch of the exotic to the countryside.

A recent visitor to the farm commented that the thistles were a plant from her childhood and not commonly seen on farms anymore. She grew up with fields of these prickly plants and remembers the hours of fun of cutting paths through them. Then came the discomfort of her mum trying to remove the thorns. Memory and nature can often be very closely intertwined.
