Doon Social Farm sensory hub is now open! Open Fridays and Saturdays between 10am and 2pm. Just ask in the cafΓ©.

Plans going forward are to have it open 24/7 for families in the local area.

Also starting soon is the construction of the sensory garden. Funding for the paths and hard landscaping was secured through Limerick City and County Council. Other donors include the Brothers of Charity (now Corlann), the Glencarbry Windfarm and Dundrum Nurseries.

The design of the garden was by award-winning landscape designer, Elma Fenton, who has won awards in Bloom and in Chelsea Flower Show.

We hope to have this project completed by November 2026, for the benefit and enjoyment of the families of Doon.

One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret, Never to be told

Life on the farm can sometimes be very precarious. Like us nature is never more vulnerable than when we are taking our first few independent steps from the nest and into the real world. As May gives way to June the first of this year’s chicks are fledging and if they are lucky their parents will feed them for another few weeks before they must find their own way. Many will starve or are caught by predators and only a few will survive to hopefully breed next season.

This Magpies chick was found by the edge of the path leading up to the old glasshouse. He was fully feathered and we carefully put him up into the hedge and safety. His parents would have been close by and if you do find a chick like this, please do not bring it home. Even with the best of intentions, we would find it very hard to supplement their natural diet .

Magpies are intelligent and adaptable members of the crow family but are very much maligned. They are blamed for the decline in the population of small birds, but the removal of native hedgerows has a far greater impact as nesting locations, food and shelter disappear. Like many areas in our lives encouraging and valuing nature can be a fine balancing act.
