We were delighted to launch Invasive Species Week today in Adare, Co. Limerick. The event was part of the Maigue Rivers Trust’s LEADER-funded education programme, delivered with StreamScapes and Nature Network Ireland, with support from Limerick City and County Council.
Community members, Tidy Towns representatives, interested locals and schoolchildren came together for a hands-on morning of learning about invasive species, biodiversity and the simple actions we can all take to protect local rivers and wildlife.
The morning began in Adare Heritage Centre, where John Armstrong of Nature Network Ireland led a practical training session for adults on invasive species, including how to identify key species of concern, how they spread, and what communities can do to help prevent further damage to local habitats.
At the same time, Stephanie O’Toole from StreamScapes visited St Nicholas National School, Adare, to give pupils an engaging talk on invasive species and biodiversity. The session included natural history items, including deer skulls, helping to bring the subject to life for the children.
The whole school then walked to Adare Town Park, where pupils joined the adult group for pond dipping and a nature walk. Together, they explored local biodiversity, looked for signs of invasive species and learned more about the importance of healthy rivers, ponds and habitats.
Local Councillor Bridie Collins and Limerick City and County Council Biodiversity Officer, Sinead McDonnell also attended the event and joined community members, pupils and organisers for the morning’s activities.
Invasive species such as Giant Hogweed, Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam can damage riverbanks, crowd out native plants, affect habitats and create risks for people, landowners and wildlife. Once invasive species become established, they can be difficult and expensive to manage, so early identification and preventing their spread are very important.
