DYLAN UPDATE ❤️‍🩹

His bloods came back and provided the team UCD Veterinary Hospital with a spark of hope. All things considered, they showed he was still fighting 💪🏽

They’re sedating him now and removing his entire sc***um, removing the masses of necrotic (dead) tissue from his many wounds as well as once and for all evicting the hundreds of maggots that have taken up residence in this amazingly brave little man 😢😢

There’s a risk he won’t survive sedation, but it’s his only hope of recovery.

Please have him in your thoughts tonight, if he can make it and the months of recovery ahead then he’ll join our family of cherished sheep and never have to feel as alone as he must have done for so long 💔💔

LAST NIGHTS EMERGENCY 🚨

This desperately critical young sheep was collapsed, gone into shock, shut down 💔💔

But our compassionate farrier didn’t pass him by, he saw him, he stopped, he felt his heart break and called us 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 thank you Dylan 💪🏽❤️

Last night our vet said he was the thinnest sheep he’s ever seen, that was just the start of it, once he was shaved the true extent of trauma was astounding.
Today we are told it’s the single worst case of maggot infestation they’ve ever seen.

These necrotic, maggot infested wounds are estimated to be 1 - 2 months old. So long to suffer alone. His left testicle has been completely eaten away. Replaced by a sc***um full of maggots. The stuff of nightmares. But we don’t turn away in disgust, we will all face this and fight it for him, this little lost ram who somehow survived this far 😔

He has pneumonia. He has scour, the possibility of sepsis is undeniable. Every wound is deep and he needs to be sedated to have them cleaned and debrided. So much trauma for one body. Thank God he’s finally on pain relief. Finally getting some care.

Though he had gone into shock and was shutting down, managed to stabilise him, and then he made it through the night, so there is a little hope. ❤️‍🩹

For one little lamb to go through this level of suffering is unthinkable. To fathom the nature of the people who must have known about his wounds and turned away… we can’t begin. Who does that. They walk among us, breathe the same air. Foul humans. 😡😡

We’ll know more about his chances later today after more work has been done to save this incredible little man, we all agree that the odds are against him, but we also all agree that he deserves to have someone TRY to help him.💔

This is the damage humans do to innocent souls, and we are the ones who people call on Sunday night with broken bodies in their arms.

Some peaceful scenes in a busy day ❤️

You wouldn’t know it from the videos. But today we had a vet visit for big Doug horse, 60 beds refreshed and plumped for the cold ahead, injections were given, animals let out to graze, wounds cleaned, stables mucked out, volunteers collected, haynets soaked and hung and refilled and all the many jobs that come with looking after 200 animals ❤️❤️

And in between all those tasks lives happiness for them 🐽🐐🐑🐴🦃

Our incredible team keep everyone safe, but your support makes this magic happen 🙏🏼🙏🏼

ITS FIVER FRIDAY 🎉🎉

And right here, this scene is why we always need your help 🙏🏼
Three lives saved who all need surgery in order to live peaceful, healthy lives ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹
Cliff and his girlfriends were saved together. When our vet scanned the ladies to see if they were pregnant what she saw wasn’t piglets in there but cysts 😔 so both girls will probably need full hysterectomies which is a more invasive operation than the usual laparoscopic ovectomies which our girls usually get 😬

Interestingly, boys can still impregnate up to 6 weeks after neutering, so sadly the girls can’t live with their love for a while yet 💔💔

Spaying and neutering saves lives, there’s a multitude of diseases and painful conditions that are preventable this way 🥹 it’s a cost that’s unavoidable if we want to run this rescue right ❤️❤️❤️ and we’ve another 10 spays to go !!!

So for fiver Friday, please help us do right by these sweet animals who had nowhere else to go. They’re so lucky to have found their way to us, now you can help us get their basic needs covered so they can begin living lives that are truly worth living ❤️❤️❤️

Poor little Cherie had a few rough days ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

Luckily she’s responded to treatment very well, today she’s bright and eager to get on with her business as a tiny rootin’ tootin’ chatty girl pig 🐽 we love to see her appetite back!! ❤️❤️❤️

So many people ask us “how do you know when they’re sick,??” Or the specific signs of possible issues, pneumonia/teeth problems/ulcers… sometimes we don’t 😞 we try our best to gather all the info we can and piece it together with the help of our vets ❤️‍🩹 there are illnesses with specific symptoms you can easily rule out - rule enough out you’ll be left with a much smaller list 💪🏽

Here’s some helpful tips

Get your pig used to having their temperature taken, just a scratch on the bum under the tail, nice and relaxed, lubricate your thermometer ‼️, and slide it in while still scratching. Don’t restrain them, just keep scratching and get their average a few times while healthy so you have a base line

Knowing your pigs daily habits is key: When do they go back to bed, straight after breakfast? Lunchtime snooze? do they always run to the fence when they hear you coming? when do they p*e and poo (and have they done both recently) are they fast eaters or do they always eat slowly.

Having eyes on them lots of times during the day is vital so you can pinpoint when the worrying symptoms started. Was it a slow burning decline in activity, a gradually fussiness with food that developed into refusing over days/weeks/months? was it a sudden development where one morning they flat out refused their breakfast.

Handling your pig friend all over their body is so important so you can tell if they’re suddenly sore in a particular spot. An unhandled pig may overreact to their stomach being pressed, possibly leading your vet down the wrong path of diagnosis whereas a well handled pig will let you palpate everywhere and tell you clearly if there’s any pain in any one area. You want them to enjoy being touched everywhere so their eyes, ears, mouth, feet and tummy can be examined when they’re feeling worried.
