This year’s NARGC Colouring Competition is now live! 🎨

⛵️ Wexford Harbour 🇮🇪, a natural harbour in County Wexford on the south-east coast of Ireland, lies at the mouth of the River Slaney, where the river flows into the Irish Sea.

The area includes extensive tidal flats, sandbanks, coastal wetlands, agricultural land, and the town of Wexford.

🛰 This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 26 May 2026, shows the harbour and surrounding coastline in natural colour. The bright sandbanks and shallow waters stand out near the harbour mouth, while the patchwork of agricultural fields inland contrasts with the darker waters of the harbour and the Irish Sea.

Sentinel-2 provides high-resolution optical imagery which supports coastal monitoring, land cover mapping, and observation of dynamic environments such as estuaries, wetlands, and sediment-rich coastal zones.

A quick glimpse of some of this year’s grey partridge chicks from the National Association of Regional Game Councils (NARGC) Grey Partridge Restoration Project in The Ballagh GPA

We try not to disturb them any more than necessary, so here is just a short video of one of our families as they continue to grow and thrive.

Grey partridge are fantastic parents, with the c**k bird in particular being fearless when it comes to defending his brood. This family unit will remain together and we plan to release them into suitable habitat in another few weeks.

What you see here is the result of a huge amount of work behind the scenes.

Good husbandry is critical — quality nutrition, clean accommodation, clean water, clean drinkers, careful monitoring and close attention to the welfare of the birds throughout their development.

Feeding with quality food also plays an important role in giving them the best possible start.

Effective predator management is equally important. A zero-tolerance approach to predators around the breeding and release areas is essential, because protecting vulnerable chicks is paramount if we are to give them a genuine chance of survival.

But the ultimate aim of the project is not simply to release birds.

The success of a restoration project should never be judged by the number of birds released, but by how many survive, breed and eventually produce wild broods of their own.

Every chick that survives to adulthood is a step in the right direction. Every wild pair that successfully raises a brood is an even bigger one.

That is the future we are working towards — a self-sustaining wild population of grey partridge.

Delighted that three young people from Wexford made their way to Harbour House Sports Club yesterday to take part in this event and were introduced to shooting sports in a safe environment.
