Toastmasters International was founded in 1924 in America by Dr. Ralph C. Today there are more than 10,000 clubs worldwide, including 100 in Ireland. Each new Toastmaster receives a new members kit with a copy of the ‘Communications and Leadership Manual’. This sets out a programme of 10 speech projects to be given at club meetings. The different type of speeches within this manual help develop skills in a variety of areas, including speech planning and organisation, use of voice and confident speech delivery. Each meeting also has a number of different speaking opportunities. The most popular is the table topics session, where members can deliver a short one minute speech in reply on a variety of subjects. In the warm, friendly atmosphere of a Toastmasters Club you can gain the confidence in public speaking and exchange ideas with fellow club members.
