A male was sentenced at Portlaoise Circuit Court today after pleading guilty to five burglaries and two trespass offences.

The offences occurred across Mountmellick, Ballacolla and Arles during 2024/2025 and involved rural farms being targeted during daylight hours.

These detections and subsequent convictions are the result of coordinated investigative work by Gardaí in the Laois/Offaly Division, including evidence gathering, scene examinations, follow-up enquiries and file preparation for the DPP.

An Garda Síochána remains committed to protecting rural communities. We continue to encourage landowners and members of the public to:

• Report suspicious activity immediately
• Record vehicle registrations and descriptions where safe to do so
• Secure sheds, outbuildings and machinery
• Engage with your local Muintir Na Tire Community Alert scheme

Timely reporting and community cooperation are critical in preventing and detecting rural crime.

If you observe suspicious activity, contact your local Garda Station or call 999/112 in an emergency.

🚔 Vehicle Recovered – Garda Checkpoint Leads to Crime Detection in Birr 🚨

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Gardaí in Birr successfully intercepted a stolen vehicle during a proactive rural checkpoint on Military Road, Crinkle. The operation, which took place around 2am, resulted in the arrest of three individuals following a brief foot pursuit.

The vehicle, previously reported stolen during a burglary in Thurles, Co. Tipperary earlier this week, was seized on-site. Gardaí also noted an attempt to alter the vehicle’s registration plate using black tape—a tactic designed to evade detection.

Thanks to the swift response and vigilance of local members, the three individuals were arrested and have since been charged with the unauthorised taking of a mechanically propelled vehicle. They are due to appear before Tullamore District Court on July 9th.

The vehicle is now being returned to its rightful owner, bringing a welcome conclusion to a distressing incident.

This result highlights the value of targeted rural checkpoints and the dedication of our Garda members working through the night to protect our communities. Investigations are ongoing, and searches of the area and vehicle are continuing to identify further evidence.

If you see something suspicious, report it. Every piece of information helps.
