Preparing for Life

Preparing for Life Improving children’s lives by supporting parents and others who work with children to use proven approaches to help children achieve their full potential.

Preparing for Life is a prevention and early intervention project based in north Dublin. We work to improve children’s lives by supporting parents, early years practitioners and teachers to use proven approaches to help children achieve their full potential. We work with families, health services, pre-schools and schools from pregnancy through childhood.

Reading with your children from birth is the single most important thing parents can do to prepare their children for school. It’s never too soon to share books with your baby.
At PFL Home Visiting we gift a book on birthdays to support this interaction 📚️

When children are given open-ended, play-based environments, they aren't taking a break from learning. They are engaging in the most sophisticated form of early education available. Open-ended play, however, forces the brain to coordinate sensory input, motor skills, social negotiation, language, and emotional regulation all at the same time. It is the ultimate cognitive workout.

A predictable environment allows children to repeat actions like dropping objects or knocking down blocks. This repetitive play acts as a basic experiment, helping them master cause-and-effect, build competence, and strengthen brain connections.

Examples could be Push-Button Toys that use switches and buttons to provide immediate audio or visual feedback. This instant reaction teaches children that their specific action caused the result, reinforcing the concept of cause-and-effect.
