The WRSLAI, in partnership with glór Theatre, Ennis, are proud to bring audiences a special screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary The Librarians (dir. Kim A. Snyder).
The screening is part of the 'Libraries for Democracy' series taking place during Ireland's EU presidency.

A panel discussion between Cora Gunter, Head Librarian of Clare Libraries, and Dolores Mee, Secretary of the Rainbow Library Group, along with Q&A, will follow the screening addressing issues in the film within the Irish context.
Film synopsis: Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and the First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities.

As part of their ongoing efforts to meet the needs of communities, Limerick City and County Council have set up the computer room in Watch House Cross Community Library as a Digital Makers Hub, in the hopes to attract young or emerging artists into the library setting and to support them in the early part of their career. These skill-shares are open to Adults and Teenagers, on a first come first serve basis (this may change going forward based on initial sessions).

This digital hub is set up with editing softwares and would act as an in-between and allow artists, filmmakers, musicians and designers to give them a go in a fun and informal environment. To try new methods of making, the only thing an eligible member of the public would need to access these wares is a library card and access to their own cloud storage or hard drive to save their work.

The funding associated with this grant is to allow for established creatives to provide talks and tutorials helping emerging artists gain insight and knowledge about the available software. This is a paid opportunity to work in their specific field and share their knowledge base connecting to other artists and creating a sense of community and continuity of knowledge sharing.

Come along to the beautiful Farmleigh Ballroom where we will examine the rise and fall of the Big House in Ireland from the Anglo-Norman Invasion to the Protestant Ascendancy and through the upheavals of land wars, revolution and civil war.

More than just homes, the Big House symbolised power, privilege, and wealth while also embodying deep divisions and unrest.

We'll explore their elegant architecture, the skilled craftmen behind them, and the contrasting lives of the families and servants within.

By the 20th century, many Big Houses stood empty, burnt or repurposed, marking the end of an era. Yet their legacy still lingers in Ireland's landscape and memory.
