🙌An important milestone for cancer survivors in Ireland this month, as the Right to Be Forgotten became law on 15 October 2026.🙌
For too long, people who survived cancer continued to face financial barriers when trying to secure mortgage protection insurance, sometimes many years after completing treatment.
Under the new legislation, eligible cancer survivors who have completed treatment and been in remission for at least five years will no longer have their previous cancer diagnosis taken into account when applying for mortgage protection insurance.
This is a significant step forward for fairness, equality and the opportunity to move forward with life after cancer.
I want to pay a special tribute to Jacqueline Daly of East Galway & Midlands Cancer Support in Ballinasloe for her tireless work and determination in campaigning for this change. Jacqueline has been a powerful voice for cancer survivors, advocating at both national and European level and helping to keep this issue firmly on the agenda.
Her contribution, alongside the work of East Galway & Midlands Cancer Support, Cancer Patients Europe, the Irish Cancer Society and so many other advocates and organisations, deserves enormous recognition.
It is a proud moment for Ballinasloe to see such important local advocacy contribute to meaningful national change.
Surviving cancer should not mean a lifetime of financial discrimination.
A hard-won achievement that will make a real difference to cancer survivors and their families.
