Today on Mother’s Day we celebrate and honour all the women who nurture, guide and care for others.
May you all be appreciated and have a very Happy Mother’s Day💐

Motherhood takes many forms. Today we send our warmest wishes to birth mothers, step-mothers, grandmothers, aunties and godmothers — and we also recognise the many others who offer the same love and support in different ways.

We give thanks for the dad-figures, older siblings, cousins, adoptive parents and foster parents who step forward with kindness, care and encouragement. The love that shapes us often comes from many hands and many hearts.

Today is about gratitude for everyone who supports the mothering role and helps guide, support and raise the next generation with compassion and strength.

Thanks to the Connacht Tribune – Galway City Tribune for highlighting the implications of what is happening at Portiuncula, not only for the hospital and the eight-county region it serves, but also the wider national issue of precedent setting for other maternity units serving rural families.

At its heart this is about safety and access to safe maternity care close to home.

Community action brought this issue to the national stage. The strong public petition organised by the Portiuncula Maternity Alliance has secured an Oireachtas Health Committee hearing on the reduction in maternity service access.

There are now calls for the decision-making processes to be examined — including safety, net safety risk analysis, proper process, transparency, accountability, equity and accessibility.

Community power brought this issue to the national stage- the public petition from the Portiuncula Maternity Alliance has driven the granting of an Oireachtas Health Committee hearing on the reduction in maternity service access, with calls for the decision to be examined- safety , proper procedural processes, transparency, accountability, equity, and accessibility.
