Old and new.

That was the perfect theme for a very special evening.

✈️Our Club's Founder and President, Burcu, is moving back to Turkey and she is also expecting her baby girl🧡, so this was one of our last meetings together in person. Although we will still see her online, we wanted to make this evening something special.

We had fun with our Table Topics questions, laughed a lot, and then turned the meeting into a celebration.

🎉A celebration of Burcu, but also of everything she has created here.

✨️When Burcu founded Speak with JOY in Debrecen, she was a Turkish woman living in Hungary, without knowing many people in the city. 🙏And yet, she had the vision, commitment and courage to create an English-speaking Toastmasters club here.

She managed to bring together a wonderful group of people who wanted to learn, practise, connect, and support each other.

✨️Today, Speak with JOY is a safe place where we can practise one of the most important skills we can develop: speaking confidently in front of other people. But it has also become much more than that. It has become a community.

🧡We wanted to say thank you to Burcu for taking that first step and making all of this possible.

🎉There were cakes, alcohol-free ch*****ne 🥂, lots of chatting, shared memories, stories about the past, and hopes for the future.

It was an evening full of smiles, gratitude, and a few emotional moments too.

We are incredibly happy that Burcu will still be part of Speak with JOY online. So this is not really goodbye.

It is simply the beginning of a new chapter.
Thank you, Burcu, for bringing us together and having the vision to create Speak with JOY.
We will miss having you in the room. But we are so happy to know that you are only one Zoom call away.

When was the last time someone’s story made you want to try something new?

When did you last hear the story behind a book and discover everything that happened before it reached the readers?

We had two very different stories at our last Toastmasters meeting, and both were fascinating.

Évi took us behind the scenes of a book translation. She shared the story of how she translated the book by Kay Peterson and David A. Kolb and how it eventually made it to the Hungarian market. We heard about the challenges and difficulties along the way, but also about the joy of seeing the book finally published in Hungarian.

Her story also reminded us of something simple but important: if we have a dream or a vision, we need to take steps towards it.

Sometimes the journey is challenging, but things start happening when we take that first step.

Then Gabi took us on a very different journey: running. She shared her personal history with running, her marathon experiences, and some of the difficulties she faced along the way. There were times when she had to stop running for a while, but she also told us how she found her way back to it and started again. 🏃‍♀️

Her enthusiasm was contagious, and by the end of the speech, we definitely felt inspired to put on our running shoes!

We also had our Table Topics session, with plenty of spontaneous answers, laughter, and great fun. And our new members are now becoming an integral part of our community, which makes our meetings even more vibrant. 💙

Two speeches, two completely different journeys, and plenty of inspiration to take home with us.

What comes to mind when you think about cities?

Busy streets, familiar places, new adventures, people coming and going?
Stories only you know?
What did you learn in some of the cities you visited?
How did they change you?

We also had reason to celebrate: some of our guests decided to join us as new members! 🎉 Our community is becoming more and more vibrant, and it is wonderful to see new people becoming part of Speak with JOY.

Panni gave a speech about “Who Are Your 5?” and offered some new perspectives on why it matters who we surround ourselves with. As usual, Panni was calm, confident, and very professional. Her speech was informative and motivational at the same time, and it definitely gave us something to think about.

Another Monday, another evening of speaking, listening, learning, and connecting.

The summer break is over, and the JOY was right where we left it! 🧡

💫It was so good to see everybody again.

It felt as if we had never really parted for the summer. We experienced the same positive vibes, and the same joy of being together.

🎉We were also delighted to welcome four guests!

And all four of them were brave enough to step up and give a 1–2-minute impromptu speech during our Table Topics session. We truly hope to see them again!

👉The theme of the day was Reunion. Surprise, surprise!

Our word of the day was serendipity. (What a lovely word)

Éva won the Table Topics section, but we all won something by being back together again.

🔥 "I have a lot on my plate, but I love my life."

👉 That was the theme of our meeting this Monday, and it felt just right.

🌞 Although the summer holidays meant we were a smaller group than usual, we still shared another evening full of meaningful conversations, laughter, and inspiration.

Éva's speech, "Plateaus Come, Plateaus Go", reminded us that plateaus are part of every journey, whether we are learning a language, building a career, or simply navigating life. Her message was relatable, encouraging, and honest. A real pleasure to listen to.

Reema, whose voice is finally back (yaaay! 🙌), not only inspired us with her speech about relationships and a powerful way to let go of difficult feelings, but also brought her usual creativity and humour to the Table Topics session.

😎 Our word of the day was audacious.

We were happy to see that even our guest and our new member, Hasneem were audacious and they gave great impromptu speeches.

🧡 Summer may have made our group a little smaller, but the joy, laughter, and inspiration were just as big. 🧡

What would you do if you were the only person left on Earth?

Or what kind of life would you choose if you didn't believe it was too good to be true?

These were just two of the questions Reema challenged us with during the Table Topics session. Even though she had almost lost her voice, her creativity, humour and readiness to take action came through effortlessly.

The theme of the evening was The Art of Life, and somehow every speech reflected it.

In her speech, Grow Where You Are Planted, Burcu Onaranel Erten took us back to the very beginning of Speak with JOY.
She reminded us that waiting for the perfect moment often means waiting forever. Instead, start where you are, trust yourself, put in the energy and let life surprise you. More often than not, things turn out even better than we imagined.

Gabriella Sőrés's speech, The Power of Early Words, was equally inspiring. Through her own story, she showed us that teaching English is about so much more than the language itself.. It's about helping people find confidence in themselves. She shared her own story with the language and even told us about some exciting research.

Although some of our university students were still missing, we still shared another warm and inspiring Monday evening together.
That's what we love most about Speak with JOY.

No matter how many people are in the room, we always leave with new ideas, a few laughs, and a little more confidence than we came with. ☺️

🔥We had the pleasure of welcoming Balázs Somogyi, who travelled from Budapest to lead a special workshop for our club.

Balázs is a project manager, leadership and communication trainer with more than 25 years of international experience, and a Past District Director of Toastmasters District 110.

🎯We focused on the different roles in a Toastmasters meeting, but instead of simply talking about what each role does, Balázs encouraged us to think a little deeper.

❓️How can you make your role more memorable?
❓️More creative?
❓️How can you add that little extra that people will remember after the meeting?

The evening was full of brainstorming, sharing ideas, and learning from each other. It reminded us that there is always room to grow, even in roles we think we already know well.

🙏A big thank you to Balázs for making the trip from Budapest to Debrecen and sharing his experience, ideas, and enthusiasm with us.

🔥 We truly enjoyed the workshop!
