🎓That’s a wrap for the school year! Today we welcomed our last organized student group visit of the academic year as 35 students from Fazekas High School joined us at American Corner Debrecen. 🙌

During their visit, they learned about the resources, programs, and opportunities available at the Corner, then put their knowledge to the test in a fast-paced Kahoot quiz. 🇺🇸 With America’s 250th birthday just around the corner next month, students also explored the history and significance of Independence Day and other key celebrations in the United States. ✨

In the framework of our English Conversation Club (ECC) "Summer Edition", on June 16, we will hold a special Flag Day-inspired session, combining our usual summer outdoor meeting with fun and interactive activities about the American flag, as well as flags and countries around the world. Expect a friendly guess-the-flag quiz and light cultural discussion. We will also move from flags into summer topics like travel plans, festivals, and holidays through games and conversation prompts.

Date and time: June 16, 5 pm
Location: Nagyerdő (Great Forest) Park, Western Shore of Békás-tó (Froggy Pond)
What to bring: blanket or mat, water, snacks, sunscreen.

What does freedom mean today—and how has its meaning evolved over time? ✨

In connection with the 250th anniversary of the United States 🇺🇸, we invite creative youth to explore the idea of liberty through creative expression in any of the following formats:

🎨 drawing, painting, illustration
📸 photo or collage
🖥️ digital art / poster
📖 comic
✍️ poem, slam poetry, short literary text
🎬 short film
🧩 installation or mixed media

📝 Each submitted work should be accompanied by a short description (3–5 sentences) in English, presenting the idea behind the work.

🖼️ Selected works will be exhibited at American Corner Debrecen in July.

🏆 Results will be announced — and prizes awarded — at our Independence Day celebration on July 3.

🇭🇺 A Debreceni Ünnepi Könyvhét programjának keretében Antal-Ferencz Ildikó szabadúszó újságíró mutatta be az Amerikai Kuckóban “Magyarnak maradni Amerikában” című kötetét, amely az Egyesült Államok magyar közösségeiben végzett kiterjedt terepmunkára és több száz interjúra épül. 📖

A szerzővel Dr. Balogh Gergely Máté történész beszélgetett az amerikai diaszpóra mindennapjairól, különös tekintettel a nyelv, a kulturális identitás és a generációk közötti folytonosság megőrzésének kihívásaira. 🗣️

A beszélgetés kitért arra is, hogy az Egyesült Államokban működő magyar egyházak, cserkészszervezetek, néptánc- és népzenei együttesek, kulturális egyesületek, valamint hétvégi magyar iskolák miként járulnak hozzá a közösségek összetartásához. E szervezeti hálózatokon keresztül az amerikai magyar diaszpóra ma is aktívan formálja az identitást és az összetartozás élményét a különböző generációk körében. 🤝

🇺🇸 As part of the Debrecen Book Festival, we welcome freelance journalist Ildikó Antal-Ferencz, who presented her volume Magyarnak maradni Amerikában (Staying Hungarian in America), based on extensive fieldwork and hundreds of interviews with Hungarian communities across the United States. 📖

In conversation with historian Dr. Máté Gergely Balogh, the discussion focused on the realities of diaspora life in the USA, especially the challenges of preserving language, cultural identity, and intergenerational continuity. 🗣️

Attention was given to how Hungarian churches, boy scouts and girl scouts, folk dance and music groups l, cultural associations, and weekend schools help sustain community cohesion. Through these networks, the U.S. Hungarian diaspora continues to shape identity and belonging across generations. 🤝
