【Event Promotion】If the world exceeds 1.5°C, even temporarily, do we still have hope? As extreme heat, severe weather, biodiversity loss and infrastructure risks intensify, this is no longer an abstract question. The choices cities make now will determine how successfully we protect people, ecosystems and future generations. 🤝

Join us for "Climate Change Beyond 1.5°C: Do We Still Have Hope? From the Latest IPCC Science to Climate Action in Cities", a public lecture and satellite event of Hong Kong Green Week 2026.

Prof Debra Roberts, former Co-Chair of Working Group II for the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, Coordinating Lead Author of the forthcoming IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities, and a core team member of UNEP’s Overshoot Spotlight Report, will share emerging international insights on climate overshoot. Rather than focusing solely on the risks, Prof Roberts will explore how science can guide practical action, why adaptation and resilience are central to sustainable development, and what cities such as Hong Kong can do to build a climate-resilient and nature-positive future.

The programme will feature:
🔹 Opening and Welcoming Remarks by Ms Wong Shuk-han, Diane, Under Secretary for Environment and Ecology, and Prof Jiang Liwen, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Affairs) of CUHK
🔹Public lecture by Prof Debra Roberts
🔹 Academic response by Prof Amos Tai, Deputy Chair (Education) of the CUHK Earth and Environmental Sciences Programme 香港中文大學 地球與環境科學課程: 'From Global Climate Science to Local Action: A Hong Kong Perspective'
🔹 Fireside conversation with Prof Roberts and Prof Tai, moderated by Ms Kitty Tam, Programme Lead at Civic Exchange
🔹Audience Q&A and closing reflection

📅 Date: Tuesday, 8 September 2026
⏰ Time: 4:00–5:30 pm

【Energy︱能源】Can Hong Kong hit its target of 70% zero-carbon electricity by 2035? We are thrilled to share that our Assistant Manager, Wing Tsang, recently spoke with Hong Kong Business Magazine to discuss the complexities of the city's green energy transition.

With CLP’s upgraded transmission system lifting imported zero-carbon power from 25% to 35% this year, we are moving in the right direction. However, long infrastructure timelines (10–15 years) and a 9% surge in electricity demand from Northern Metropolis data centres mean we have to plan carefully. Balancing grid stability, cross-border imports, and stable tariffs is a massive puzzle, but Hong Kong can navigate these challenges to secure a sustainable future.

Our Operation Manager, Ivy Yeung represented Civic Exchange at two Joint Consultation Sessions on Hong Kong’s First Five-Year Plan and the 2026 Policy Address in July. We shared Civic Exchange’s views and proposals on building a more sustainable city and creating high-quality living spaces, as well as advancing a green and silver economy. By aligning climate resilience with the needs of our ageing population, we can shape a stronger, future-ready Hong Kong.

We appreciate the opportunity to contribute to discussions on Hong Kong’s future development, and look forward to seeing these priorities reflected in the upcoming policy agenda.

Civic Exchange was pleased to participate in the IUCN China–Japan–Korea Members Meeting in Kumamoto, held alongside the Global Nature Positive Summit 2026. The meeting brought together IUCN Members to exchange experiences and explore opportunities for regional collaboration in advancing the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the outcomes of the IUCN World Conservation Congress.

During the meeting, Civic Exchange’s Programme Lead Kitty Tam shared Hong Kong SAR's progress in advancing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) through the Hong Kong Nature-based Solutions Design Guidelines. As an international financial centre, Hong Kong is well positioned to connect China's ecological civilisation agenda with international standards, sustainable finance, professional services and innovation, while demonstrating how NbS can be implemented in one of the world's most densely populated cities.

Looking ahead, we see significant opportunities to strengthen collaboration across East Asia on urban NbS, sustainable finance and climate resilience. By working together across governments, businesses, academia and civil society, we can accelerate the transition towards nature-positive, climate-resilient cities and share practical lessons with the Greater Bay Area, the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

We thank the IUCN Japan Committee and fellow IUCN Members for facilitating this valuable exchange.
