[Youth Mediation Paves the Way Forward, Rule of Law Shapes the Future]
Youth development thrives on diverse learning experiences, and the cultivation of leadership and the rule of law is equally indispensable.

Ms Joyce Cheng, Council Member of The Law Society of Hong Kong ("the Law Society"), attended the Launch Ceremony of the Greater Bay Area Youth Mediation Training Centre (the “Centre”) today (15 August 2026) on behalf of the Law Society, joining representatives from the legal profession and distinguished guests in witnessing this important milestone in advancing youth mediation development. Established jointly by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Leadership Institute and HKFYG School of Continuing Education, the Centre serves as a professional platform for young people across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (“GBA”). As one of the supporting organisations, the Law Society is pleased to see the Centre promote mediation culture and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms through training, exchanges and industry collaboration, while nurturing a new generation of rule of law and mediation talent equipped with professional knowledge, practical skills and an international outlook, contributing to the development of the rule of law and social harmony in the GBA.

Mediation is more than a means of resolving disputes. It embodies the spirit of respect, rational communication and consensus-building. As an international legal and dispute resolution services centre, Hong Kong has been actively promoting a culture of mediation in recent years. The establishment of the headquarters of the International Organization for Mediation in Hong Kong further reinforces the city's unique role as an international hub for mediation.

Nurturing young people has always been one of the Law Society's key missions. Since its launch in 2009, the Teen Talk programme has engaged more than 19,000 young people from over 520 schools. In addition, initiatives such as the GBA Study Tour and Teen Talk Mentorship Programme continue to connect with young people, encouraging them to understand the law, care for society, broaden their horizons, and develop the knowledge, capabilities and positive values needed for the future.

The rule of law is a cornerstone of Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability. As new opportunities arise from the development of the GBA and the Northern Metropolis, demand for efficient, professional and forward-looking dispute resolution services is expected to continue growing. The Law Society looks forward to working hand in hand with stakeholders across the community to support youth development and legal education, cultivate more young talent with a strong commitment to the rule of law, an international outlook and a collaborative mindset, and inject fresh impetus into the development of Hong Kong, the Nation and the wider region.

[🇰🇷 Cheers to the Successful Conclusion of the Korean Internship Programme 2026 🥂]

Proudly co-organised by The Law Society of Hong Kong (“the Law Society”), the Korean Ministry of Justice and the Korean Bar Association, the Korean Internship Programme 2026 (“the Programme”) successfully concluded on 14 August 2026. This year, we embarked on a rewarding two-week journey with 19 young Korean lawyers and law students in Hong Kong, made possible through the generous support of our members’ law firms and corporations.

To celebrate the successful completion of the Programme, the Law Society hosted a Closing Cocktail at its new office premises. The event brought together Korean interns, members of Hong Kong’s legal profession and distinguished guests from the Korean community in Hong Kong. We were honoured to welcome Mr Chun Sunghwan, Acting Consul-General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong; Mr Ryu Seokchun, Director General of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) Hong Kong; and Mr Chang Sung Yup, Director of the Korean Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, whose presence reflected the enduring ties between Hong Kong and Korea.

In his welcome remarks, Mr Roden Tong, BBS, President of the Law Society, reaffirmed the Law Society's longstanding commitment to nurturing the next generation of legal professionals and strengthening international legal connections. President Tong highlighted Hong Kong's unique strengths under the principle of “One Country, Two Systems” as the only common law jurisdiction within China and one of the world's few truly bilingual common law jurisdictions. He also encouraged the interns to embrace emerging technologies, including AI, while upholding the core values of professionalism, integrity and the rule of law. In addition, he urged them to cherish the friendships and professional networks forged during the Programme and to continue serving as bridges between the legal communities of Hong Kong and Korea.

A highlight of the evening was the interns' sharing session. Through heartfelt reflections on their internship experiences, they spoke about the insights they had gained, the friendships they had formed, and their deeper appreciation of Hong Kong's unique legal system and international outlook. Their stories vividly reflected the spirit of learning, exchange and mutual understanding that lies at the heart of the Programme.

As the evening drew to a close, participants celebrated not only the successful completion of the Programme, but also the meaningful connections forged over the past two weeks. Although this chapter has come to an end, the friendships, professional networks and shared memories created throughout the journey will undoubtedly continue to strengthen the ties between the legal professions of Hong Kong and Korea for years to come.

The Law Society remains committed to fostering international exchange and empowering young legal professionals to broaden their horizons, embrace new opportunities and thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. We look forward to welcoming future cohorts and continuing to build bridges, inspire talent and strengthen ties across borders through this valuable initiative. We wish all interns every success in their future endeavours and look forward to crossing paths again in the years ahead.

[The Law Society and its Common Law Centre Deepens Common Law Education and Professional Exchange with Legal Professionals from Shandong]

Professional exchanges and cooperation within the legal sector have always served as an important bridge for advancing the rule of law and fostering professional development in Hong Kong, the country and beyond. Against this backdrop, the Common Law Centre (the “Centre”) of The Law Society of Hong Kong (the “Law Society”), since its establishment last year, has been delivering high-quality common law courses and training on practical topics with the aim of cultivating legal talents.

These two days (13 and 14 August 2026), the Centre organised a two-day programme for a group of legal practitioners from Zibo, Shandong comprising common law seminars and visits to legal institutions in Hong Kong. This initiative is designed as a natural extension of the Law Society’s visit to Shandong in September last year led by President of the Law Society, Mr Roden Tong, BBS, with a delegation of young lawyers; and since then, the Law Society has remained committed to strengthening its ties with the legal professionals in the province.

Yesterday, Council Member Mr Ronald Sum and member Mr Arthur Cheung, both experienced lecturers in the Chinese Mainland University Lecture Series of the Centre, delivered an insightful lecture on “International Commercial Dispute Resolution”. Today, Vice-President Ms Careen Wong and Council Member Mr Justin Yuen of the Law Society presented a lecture titled “Cross-Border Professional Practice: A Hong Kong Common Law Perspective”. They were also joined by several members of the young lawyers’ delegation that visited Shandong last September, providing an opportunity for further professional exchanges, sharing and updates.

Visits to the eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre and the AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre were also arranged for the course participants, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s alternative dispute resolution landscape. The Law Society extends its sincere gratitude to both institutions for their continued support and warm hospitality in receiving the delegation.

The Law Society is pleased to have received very positive feedback from the participants, and the programme’s fruitful conclusion further demonstrates the Law Society’s commitment to promoting common law education. Founding on the synergy built up last year, this programme further facilitates and strengthens mutual learning, knowledge sharing, and the common vision of nurturing of legal talents. The Law Society remains dedicated to collaborating with leading academic institutions, judicial bodies, and legal institutions in non-common law jurisdictions, including the Chinese Mainland and potentially jurisdictions under the Belt and Road Initiative, to advance common law education and strengthen professional exchanges.

[The Law Society of Hong Kong’s Participation in the “Think Business, Think Hong Kong” in Kuala Lumpur]

Hosted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, its flagship overseas promotional event, “Think Business, Think Hong Kong”, was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 11 August 2026. As the statutory self-regulatory body for solicitors in Hong Kong, The Law Society of Hong Kong (“the Law Society”) was pleased to once again being invited to support this important platform by setting up an exhibition booth to showcase Hong Kong’s sound legal system, professional legal services and the diverse work of the Law Society to an international audience of business leaders, investors and professionals.

Representing the Law Society, Council Member Ms Sharon Tam and Young Member Mr Jacky Chan hosted the Law Society's exhibition booth and engaged with participants from across the region, highlighting Hong Kong's unique strengths as the only Chinese-English bilingual common law jurisdiction in China under the principle of “One Country, Two Systems”, as well as its crucial role as a “super connector” and “super value-adder” linking the Chinese Mainland and global markets.

They also shared how Hong Kong's legal profession supports enterprises in navigating cross-border legal and regulatory challenges as they expand internationally. Backed by a highly internationalised legal framework, an independent judiciary and a trusted legal profession, Hong Kong remains well positioned as a leading international legal and dispute resolution services centre and a preferred gateway for global business and investment.

[Task Force on Supporting Mainland Enterprises in Going Global - Delegation to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia]

At the invitation of Invest Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, Ms Careen Wong, Vice-President of The Law Society of Hong Kong (“the Law Society”), joined the “Task Force on Supporting Mainland Enterprises in Going Global - Delegation to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia” led by The Hon Algernon Yau, JP, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR from 10 to 12 August 2026.

Through meetings and exchanges with local businesses and chambers of commerce, the delegation promoted Hong Kong’s unique advantages as a strategic two-way gateway connecting the Chinese Mainland and Malaysia, and provided Chinese Mainland enterprises with valuable insights into opportunities arising from Malaysia’s evolving business landscape.

On 12 August 2026, Ms Wong was invited to speak at a business seminar cm networking lunch under the theme “Hong Kong: Your Strategic Springboard to Chinese Mainland and Malaysia”, sharing how Hong Kong’s professional service providers support businesses in their globalisation journey, further showcasing the vital role of Hong Kong’s legal services in helping enterprises navigate complex cross-border legal challenges as they expand into new markets.

Ms Wong also took the opportunity to reconnect with The Right Honourable Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, Former Chief Justice of Malaysia, who spoke at the Symposium on Diversity and Inclusion hosted by the Law Society earlier this year to share insights on how women leaders are driving meaningful change for justice across Asia.

As the saying goes, “law comes first”. A robust legal framework provides legal certainty and confidence upon which investment and commerce thrive. Leveraging Hong Kong’s common law system, internationally recognised legal services and strong connectivity with both the Chinese Mainland and international markets, the Law Society will continue to promote the strengths of Hong Kong’s legal profession and reinforce Hong Kong’s role as an international legal and dispute resolution services centre.
