Declared by the FAO, 2026 is the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

As we continue our commitment to overcoming barriers in the coffee industry within Guatemala's coffee communities, we're excited to amplify the importance of women's roles in coffee cultivation - sharing details on some of the hardships women in coffee face, why women are the backbone of agrifood systems, and how De La Gente is driving change in local coffee communities.

With Mother's Day approaching, this achievement feels even more meaningful. It reflects the strength, care, and dedication that mothers bring to their families, their work, and their communities every day. The IYWF 2026 is a chance to raise awareness, advocate for gender equality, and support the creation of better policies.

Join us in celebrating and uplifting women in agriculture around the world.

Every cup of coffee holds a story – but this story isn’t just ours, it’s something that we’re continuing to build together.

At De La Gente, our coffee story is rooted in the people who bring each cup to life – the coffee producers, community members, travelers, partners, and supporters who believe in building a more equitable coffee system.

Through audience analysis, storytelling, and outreach programs, Cecilia and Aliisa work together and make up our Marketing Team. They create strategies to increase the effectiveness in sharing the work involved in all areas of our programs, educate our audiences about the intricacies of the coffee industry, and connect coffee drinkers, travelers, and our partners with our partner cooperatives located in some of Guatemala’s coffee growing communities.

Together, we can continue building a coffee system rooted in dignity, connection, and shared impact. Every cup, every contribution, and every connection helps carry our founding values forward.

Coffee tastes different when you meet the people who grow it and experience what’s involved in its cultivation.

The De La Gente Immersion Program offers a meaningful way to raise awareness about coffee production while connecting with the many people involved in its cultivation. Through Origin Trips, Educational Trips, or Immersion Trips, participants gain a deeper understanding of the journey behind each cup.

Helping guide these experiences is our Immersion Program Manager, Pete, who works closely with our partner producers and groups of visitors to shape life-changing experiences for people, while influencing them to have more awareness of the products they consume – all while fostering lasting connection, learning, and meaningful cultural exchange.

Our Community Tourism Program at De La Gente offers meaningful travel experiences in Antigua in Guatemala’s coffee community, San Miguel Escobar. Members of our partner cooperative, The Coffee Growers of San Miguel Escobar, welcome guests into their homes and coffee fields through organized Coffee Tours and traditional Cooking Classes – creating space for authentic cultural exchange while generating additional income for coffee-producing families.

Supporting these local travel experiences in Antigua Guatemala is our Community Tourism Team – Claudia and Luis – who work directly with host families and visitors from around the world to coordinate meaningful and memorable travel opportunities.

Through our relationship-based trade model at De La Gente, we connect producers and buyers directly, which also restores the connection between people and coffee. Our Coffee Commercialization Program puts coffee producers first, creating direct relationships with buyers while ensuring greater transparency and equity in the coffee supply chain, and generating opportunities that help them earn fairer prices and build more sustainable livelihoods.

Marcela and Wilfred join together to make up our Coffee Commercialization Program Team, which has expanded greatly through both roasted coffee and green coffee sales in the past few years. This program is crucial to the success of our mission as it addresses and overcomes one of the biggest challenges producers face – access to fair and reliable markets.

Today's the day! We're celebrating 12 years of De La Gente! 🎉☕

From our beginnings in 2014 to today, we've continued to grow alongside the small-scale coffee producers and communities that we work with. What started as a vision for change has expanded into a growing network of interconnected programs supporting coffee commercialization, community development initiatives, community tourism, and immersive learning experiences.

While our work continues to grow, our roots remain grounded in empowering coffee producers, strengthening their livelihoods, and building a more equitable coffee system while honoring coffee as a legacy and pathway towards opportunity.

Every step forward reflects the collective effort of coffee producers, our team members, and supporters who make our work possible. Our impact is only possible through community. We're incredibly grateful for everyone who has been part of our journey.

Your belief in our work continues to make change possible. Thank you for being part of our coffee community. Here's to 12 years and an exciting future ahead for De La Gente!

As we work alongside and strengthen coffee producers and their communities in Guatemala, our Cooperative Assistance Program is centered on supporting producer-led and community-driven initiatives that help build cooperative capacity, expand access to resources, and reinvest in coffee-related education.

Helping guide and support this work is our Development Manager, Isabel, who collaborates closely with partner producers to implement initiatives that bring community-centered goals to life. By implementing fundraising strategies that connect supporters to our mission, she works towards generating contributions directly that support our programs and coffee-producing communities.

At De La Gente, we’re creating impact through coffee.

But impact in coffee doesn’t only happen in the fields – it also happens in the office.

Our Finance Team – Silvia and Ludving – helps us make our work possible by ensuring that coffee sales, producer payments, budgets, and program funding are managed responsibly. Their work ensures that resources are responsibly managed and sustainably support the growth of our organization – helping turn funding into meaningful impact.

De La Gente was founded in 2014 to help address some of the challenges involved in the coffee industry – particularly the limited market access and economic barriers that many small scale coffee producers face. By creating direct market opportunities with the coffee supply chain and expanding access to essential resources, our goal has always been to support producers in strengthening their livelihoods while contributing to a more equitable coffee system.

Helping lead this vision is our Executive Director, Danilo, who shapes and guides strategies to generate meaningful impact within coffee-growing communities in Guatemala. Through thoughtful leadership, he supports our team on approaching different projects with clarity and purpose, ensuring that individual strengths contribute to meaningful outcomes.

With coffee being at the foundation of our roots, we honor coffee as a livelihood, legacy, and pathway towards opportunity. For over a decade, these roots have guided our commitment to creating a change in Guatemala’s coffee growing communities.

One of the main takeaways from this year’s Origin Trip involved witnessing the evolution of a coffee plant’s life.

Every coffee tree begins as a small seedling in a nursery for at least 9 months before ready to be planted in a field. With time and care, they grow into strong coffee trees that sustain families and communities in Guatemala.

In many ways, these young plants mirror the journey of DLG itself. 12 years ago, De La Gente was just a seed planted in the shadows of Guatemala’s volcanoes. Growth takes time, care, and strong foundations – and you were the water that helped that seed grow.

Our growth is clearly seen in the progress we’ve been able to achieve together over the years. As De La Gente’s anniversary is soon to arrive, we’re celebrating the ripple effect of impact and equity that has connected more than 140 small-scale producers to international markets and community growth opportunities.

What began as a small vision for greater change has grown through relationships, collaboration, and a shared commitment. In the upcoming weeks, we’ll be highlighting the people, visions, and work behind the programs that help us cultivate change, and sharing insights from the people and programs behind De La Gente.
