Bringing the fun and making a difference, one Spring Break at a time💙

A few weeks ago, student volunteers from Elon University traveled to Nashville during their spring break to help throw a spring carnival for HERO families at the Nashville Rescue Mission! They helped run various carnival themed booths for our families, featuring face painting, pizza, games, and more - and this wasn't their first time to support us.

This year's trip was a full-circle moment, as student volunteers from Elon also helped the HERO and Nashville Community Connections teams move into this building 4 years ago! It was fun to exchange stories about students and how much our work has grown ...

Several MNPS middle schools hosted their first-ever baseball teams this Spring!

Our Sports Equity Fund sprung into action in all the ways we work:
✨UniCycle partners hosted drives amongst school and travel teams
✨The Sounds stepped in with a collection of gently-used items
✨We used a combination of funds from Jeffrey Simmons' "Sacks for Sports Equity" campaign and credit from our Play It Again Sports partnership to purchase new uniforms for three teams

That's a well-rounded effort- Play Ball!

Introducing: The Sports Equity Fund!

We believe that every student should have the opportunity to play on a school sports team or participate in extracurriculars, regardless of family circumstances. Taking part creates a sense of community, connection, responsibility and joy.

Highlights of the Sports Equity Fund:
🏅 Direct support to students enrolled in the HERO Program to mitigate any barriers preventing them from playing
🏅 Sports physicals are arranged and paid for (including transportation if necessary), so that students can try out for teams and be cleared to play
🏅 Individual sports gear when a student makes a team – this school year we supported baseball and basketball players, track runners, soccer players, a dance team member, football players and a middle school girl joining her school’s first-ever flag football team
🏅 MNPS team support – we’ve purchased new equipment for the Maplewood High School football team and baseball pants, socks and belts for three brand new MNPS middle school baseball teams.

The Sports Equity Fund is primarily supported by two Nashville champions of the power of sports - locally-owned Play It Again Sports in the Bellevue neighborhood and Tennessee Titan Jeffery Simmons, through his Give 'Em A Reason foundation.

Together, we’re eliminating financial and logistical barriers to sports participation and supporting underfunded sports teams at MNPS schools.

In partnership with LG and the Titans ONE Community, we've introduced upgraded donation lockers at four of our Metro Nashville Public Schools UniCycle: A School Uniform Recycling Program in Nashville partner schools!

Replacing our traditional UniCycle baskets and posted outside, these lockers are designed to be a better, bigger, more accessible spot to drop off "outgrown, not worn out" clothing donations at schools. The first four can be found:

✨Percy Priest PTO Parents
✨Robert Churchwell Museum Magnet Elementary
✨Jere Baxter Middle School
✨Tusculum Elementary School

A huge thank you to Tennessee Titans ONE Community and LG Global for your role in helping MNPS students!

When we have an abundance of a particular item - like these teen-girl-sized blue jeans, recently - we make it a priority to get them into the right hands. We’re committed to making sure our resources reach the most useful places, and, in this case, reached out to several middle and high schools to check on needs and then packed boxes for delivery.

Special thanks to Margaret, one of our dedicated volunteers, who always shows up ready to make an impact!💙

Nearly a century ago, a simple act of kindness helped change the course of Cora Mathews Horn’s life. Today, that spirit of generosity continues to ripple through our community.

Nashville Community Connections was honored this year to receive funding from The Cora Matthews Horn Fund for Families at Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee (CFMT) and their Angel Fund. The gift went towards our mission of providing quick and flexible support to individuals and families facing unexpected hardship, aligning with Cora's story and values.

Cora's legacy lives on through partnerships that share her belief in community and being there for one another - two tenets we believe in at Nashville Community Connections.

We’re grateful to be part of a story that reminds us how powerful community support can be in changing lives💙

It's all in our name! Nashville Community Connections was created to offer ways for the community to use existing resources to help us connect Nashville students with the necessities they need to be present and ready to learn each day at school.

This goal goes further than just within our own programming - we’re grateful to consistently partner with other trusted organizations across the city to ensure that resources get to where they’re needed most.

Here’s a look at the incredible organizations we worked alongside last month to help distribute items for our community!

Backfield in Motion, Inc.

From Nashville to Guatemala - our friends Soles4Souls are creating opportunity for people through shoes ⭐

Some of our HERO and Nashville Community Connections team traveled to Guatemala recently with our partners at Soles4Souls. We had the privilege of witnessing their work in action on an international scale - from helping distribute shoes to children to seeing how their 4Opportunity program turns gently used shoes into a business model and mentorship.

Experiencing this work firsthand deepened our appreciation for the mission we are a part of here in Nashville through the 4EveryKid initiative, where we distribute thousands of new shoes to students each year.

We spent this special time working alongside other folks from across the country who also support students in unstable housing, building relationships and sharing best practices. Soles4Souls - Thank you for having us on this truly remarkable experience💙

Now that we're fully into the swing of the Spring semester, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Lute’s Lights and all their efforts in helping MNPS students throughout December💙

Thanks to your donations and Alex and Jana's sincere dedication, Lute's Lights presented us with nearly $15,000 to go towards our work. This donation has helped us start this second half of the school year on the right foot, ensuring that we have programming in place to serve MNPS students with all they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Year after year, Lute's Lights brings the Nashville community together with a spirit of generosity and joy. We felt an overwhelming amount of love and support, and we couldn’t be more grateful to be part of such a meaningful tradition!
