School support staff help our children learn and thrive. Yet some are relying on food banks to feed their own families. Others are taking second jobs just to afford Christmas presents for their children.

That’s why around 50 school support staff rallied in Caerphilly this morning to demand an end to term-time only pay.

After the rally, they spent an hour telling the council leader what these unfair pay arrangements mean for their families and demanding change.They shouldn’t have to struggle to make ends meet while doing such vital work. And they’re not prepared to accept it.

School support staff across Wales are coming together to fight for year-round pay. The more people who stand with them, the more pressure we can build to win change.

Eve Williams represented Caerphilly Unison at a very wet March for Unity in Cardiff organised by Stand Up to Racism Cardiff on Saturday.

The march demonstrated a united stand against the far right and served as a powerful beacon of hope, showing that division and intolerance will not prevail.✊

**RIVER CLEAN UP TOMORROW!!**

Join Officers and Caerphilly Unison members as part of 2 another River clean-up tomorrow In Sirhowy Valley Country Park.

This is being coordinated by the Branch's Environmental Officer Emma Saunders coinciding with the excellent work being down around UNISON Year of the Green worker.

The last one resulted in dozens of bags of rubbish and some very interesting items found!

If you speak to your line manager you can be released for this in work time as part of the Council's Volunteering scheme!

Caerphilly school support staff are getting organised to end term-time-only pay

School support staff keep schools running – supporting children in classrooms, caring for pupils with additional needs, preparing food, keeping buildings clean and safe, and carrying out vital admin and technical work.

But most are only paid for the weeks they work during term time, with that salary then spread across 12 months. For many, that means earning less over the year than someone working full-time on the minimum wage.

Support staff across Caerphilly have decided this needs to change.

Pictured are UNISON school support staff champions from across the county, who came together recently to start planning how colleagues in their schools can build support for 52-week pay.
And they are not acting alone. UNISON members across Wales are coming together around the same demand: Welsh Government funding to end term-time-only pay.

This should not come from already stretched school budgets. Properly valuing school support staff needs proper funding.

More than 11,000 people signed the petition in its first week. Add your name and help show the strength of support for change.

As you may have heard The Local Government Association (LGA), acting on behalf of the National Joint Council (NJC) for Local Government Services, announced last night that agreement has been reached on the 2026 pay award for local government employees. The settlement provides for a 3.3% increase in pay rates and allowances with effect from 1 April 2026.

Although the Trade Unions have reluctantly agreed to this pay increase, work has already started on the 2027/28 Pay Award campaign. We urge all members to play an active role in the campaign to help achieve the fair pay award YOU deserve!

The pay award (and arrears from April 1st ) will be paid in Septembers pay for Caerphilly emlpoyees.
