The YNC Kitchen is open five days a week and serves allergy-aware, nutritious hot meals prepared with intercepted supermarket surplus food on a Pay-As-You-Feel basis. The menu changes regularly depending on the food we receive, but we normally have a range of soups, curries and toasties available, with options for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters alike. The York Nurturing Community (YNC), is a

registered ‘start up’ group with the York Centre for Voluntary Service (CVS)
Having launched our six month pilot initiative during 2016, we at the YNC are continuing to develop and expand our pop-up interactive community Hub and Café devoted to supporting and promoting community cohesion and wellbeing. The YNC comprises local parents who aim to create a relaxed, family-friendly meeting space which (in the absence of a traditional village) will provide opportunities for community members to connect and experience a tangible sense of ‘community’. The emphasis will be on nurturing community well-being through a focus on healthy eating, social interaction and learning. The pop-up café runs on Thursdays and Fridays at the Super Sustainable Centre in Derwenthorpe serving a range of delicious, home-cooked and allergy friendly food, comprising easy-to-serve light snacks and hearty soups. This is prepared by our chef who is licensed to prepare food at her home. Our sessions incorporate information hubs and free workshops conducted by professionals who have offered to share their expertise on a voluntary basis. The activities chosen represent a range of family-appropriate interests, such as drama, gardening & nature, nutrition, arts & crafts, singing, post-natal classes, toddler group, mindfulness and yoga as a starting point to connecting members of the York community. Discussions on social media, confirmed in further research by YNC (including a survey of 140 respondents and a review of research findings published on the City of York Council website) indicate that York families have identified a genuine need and desire to participate in a community-building endeavour of this nature.

A brief history of YNC

York Nurturing Community (YNC) is run by local residents who are passionate about the York community. We have a dedicated team consisting of both paid staff and volunteers.

In June 2016, three local parents launched an six month pilot of a weekly interactive pop-up cafe at the Super Sustainable Centre in Derwenthorpe. Workshops, groups and a safe play area accompanied Emily's (now legendary) curries and soups, and we gained a loyal group of regular attendees.

In September 2016 we began to receive intercepted surplus food from Tesco via the FareShare scheme. These were offered to our patrons free of charge and consisted of bread, pastries, fruit and vegetables. Any surplus from this was donated to local organisations such as Food not Bombs.

In November 2017 we received funding from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation which enabled us to expand our pop-up cafe to two days a week.
