Groups are great for some people who feel able to walk into a room with a group of strangers and get support in that way. But not every person feels able to cope with the social anxiety of such a proposition or way too overwhelmed by life to even consider it. Groups help but they aren’t for everyone and we’ve all said it, “reach out”. But I know myself and from those I’ve lost to su***de “reaching out” is the last thing you feel able to do. So much funding goes into groups and peer shared activities while professional help is hard to access with waiting lists and stretched support services unable to provide fast tracked immediate support. What happens to those who can’t or will never feel able to join a group of strangers where that kind of support is just not something they can engage with? Men’s groups and suppprt groups are fantastic for those who can reach into it but what about the thousands of others who can’t or aren’t able to engage with it? There’s a huge gap for those people and all to often they suffer alone feeling helpless.
