How old is West Horsley Place?

Our understanding of the estate's earliest history is continuing to evolve thanks to historical research and recent archaeological discoveries. We've just published a fascinating new article exploring the medieval beginnings of West Horsley Manor and West Horsley Place, revealing more about the people, buildings and stories that shaped the estate long before the Tudor period.

This weekend we unveiled a wonderful new sculpture by Catriona Robertson, inspired by the hidden histories and layered landscapes of West Horsley Place.

Catriona's work draws inspiration from the 17th-century red brick wall constructed to conceal an older timber framed manor house. The title A Glorious Sham came from Bamber Gascoigne’s playful description of the red brick facade.

The sculpture reimagines fragments of the site’s architecture as a future remnant: a free-standing portal embedded within the landscape, where past, present, and speculative futures converge.

Find out more about the process and inspiration behind this new sculpture in our Q&A with the artist - https://westhorsleyplace.org/about-us/news/exploring-time-nature-and-architecture-an-interview-with-catriona-robertson

In July 1533, West Horsley Place hosted Henry VIII at what may have been the happiest moment of his reign. Fresh from marrying Anne Boleyn and breaking with Rome, the king arrived in triumph, convinced his dynasty was secure. Welcomed by his cousins, Henry and Gertrude Courtenay, he enjoyed days of feasting, music, dancing and hunting.

A surviving banquet menu reveals the lavish three-course meal, comprising around 15 dishes for each course. This included Tudor delicacies from sturgeon and venison to blancmange and pistachio apples.

Visitors can relive the revelry of that remarkable visit through our Hosting Henry VIII event on 25-26 July, stepping back into the sights, sounds and celebrations of the Tudor Court.
