📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀:
This course introduces students to Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s proofs for God’s existence as presented in The Landmarks of the Foundational Principles of Religion (Maʿālim Uṣūl al-Dīn). The course focuses on the four major arguments al-Rāzī presents in this work: the contingency argument, the kalām cosmological argument, the specification argument, and the design argument. Through these proofs, students will explore not only al-Rāzī’s theological reasoning, but also the wider metaphysical assumptions, causal theories, cosmological models, and scientific ideas of his time that shape his approach to proving God’s existence.

Dr Shoaib Ahmed Malik is Lecturer in Science and Religion at the University of Edinburgh. Holding PhDs in Chemical Engineering and Theology, his work bridges science, philosophy, and Islamic theology.

🕋 Blessed Day of ‘Arafah

The Day of ‘Arafah is regarded as one of the most virtuous and spiritually significant days in the Islamic calendar - a day distinguished by divine mercy, forgiveness, sincere supplication, and closeness to Allāh ﷻ.

Allah ﷻ says: “And remember Allah during the appointed days.” (Qur’an 2:203)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “There is no day on which Allah sets free more slaves from Hell than on the Day of ‘Arafah.” (Muslim)

He ﷺ also stated: “The best du‘ā is the du‘ā of the Day of ‘Arafah, and the best of what I and the Prophets before me have said is: ‘There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner.’” (Muwatta Imam Malik)

Abu Qatādah (raḍiyAllāhu ‘anhu) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Fasting the Day of ‘Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.” (Muslim)

Even for those who are not performing Hajj, this day carries immense blessings and tremendous reward. The Day of ‘Arafah opens the door to forgiveness, supplication, and spiritual renewal. It is a day on which hearts soften, sins are erased, and souls are elevated through the remembrance of Allah.

⤵️ To maximise the blessings of this day:

📿 Fast the Day of ‘Arafah if you are not performing Hajj
📿 Recite the Takbīr after every farḍ prayer beginning from Fajr of the 9th
📿 Dedicate time to repentance and seeking Allah’s forgiveness
📿 Frequently engage in dhikr
📿 Make du‘ā for your family, the Ummah, and your future
📿 Give generously in charity
📿 Make intention of seeking sacred knowledge

💚 Let us enter the days of ‘Īd with hearts purified, tongues engaged in the glorification of Allah, and souls filled with hope and tranquillity.

🤲 May Allah ﷻ accept from us, forgive us, and allow us to witness these sacred days with faith, joy, and nearness to Him.

Each lesson uncovers a key chapter in this transformation: the fractured order after the Mongol invasions, the rise of the Timurids and their cultural legacy, the growth of West African powers and scholarship in Timbuktu, the fall of al-Andalus, the emergence of the Ottomans and the conquest of Constantinople, the impact of Portuguese expansion in the Indian Ocean, and the establishment of the Mughal Empire in India. The course concludes with a synthesis of this age of imperial transition and its lasting consequences.

Ustadh Abu Ayyub is an expert historian, author and educator, and consultant on Islamic history based in Istanbul.
