We awarded a grant of £26,000 to Hounslow Education Business Charity (trading as Spark!) in June 2024, through the Projects for Young People programme, to deliver a ’Work Readiness’ programme to support 3 special schools’ Key Stage 4 (ages 14-16) students. The project worked with Year 10 and 11 students with moderate learning difficulties and/or autism, and who all have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Young people with learning disabilities have more barriers to finding and sustaining employment, and the proportion of working age (18-64) NHS users with a learning disability in paid employment is low. In Ealing, only 2.2% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment and in Hounslow this number is 3.4%.
This project worked with young people who are most in need of support.
The programme included Spark! SEND Programmes Manager spending time in the schools getting to know the young people, building a safe and trusting relationship. This built confidence in the young people, and allowed them to begin, develop and improve their social interaction.
Two Industry insight site visits for each young person, to local businesses were organised, with each student spending up to 6 hours on site at a local business.
Each school benefited from 4 In-school communication and employability workshops on themes such as employability skills sought by employers, and types of jobs available in the local labour market, with each workshop involving up to 3 volunteers from local businesses (including Heathrow Airport and SEGRO plc).
The workshop themes were tailored to the needs of each cohort, but included themes of: Communication skills, Goal setting, Resilience and confidence, reflecting on strengths and weaknesses and interview skills.
The project also provided facilitated group mentoring workshops, using tailored resources from their 1:1 mentoring programmes delivered in mainstream schools. These group sessions involved employer volunteers and covered themes such as, goal-setting, planning for the future and leadership skills (all tailored around the individual young people's needs).
The project ended with a celebration/wrap up event attended by teachers, friends and parents/carers. The celebration event was a wonderful chance to highlight the change in the young people's social interaction, their connections to outside business volunteers, and their understanding of and confidence about future career opportunities. With certificates for each young person and volunteer, the volunteers also provided goody bags for each young person.
The project took place in Ealing and Hounslow and 174 young people were actively involved with 67 volunteers giving their time. 3 school and 8 businesses participated.
