Heathrow Community Trust

Heathrow Community Trust Heathrow Community Trust is a charitable incorporated organisation supporting and strengthening local communities close to the airport.

Heathrow Community Trust is part of an independent grant making charity, set up in 1996 to support and strengthen local communities close to the airport. In the past two year we have donated more than £1 million through our three grant programmes, awarding more than 300 grants in nine boroughs around the airport. Our funds come from three sources - an annual donation from Heathrow Airport, spare c

hange from airport passengers and fines imposed on aircraft that breach noise limits. Many of our Trustees are from the communities around Heathrow and their local knowledge helps us to make sure our grants are awarded to projects that will really make a positive difference to life.

Lovely to see the impact of our funding. Thank you for sharing.

We awarded a grant to The Adult Training Network Limited of £15,000 in July 2024 through the Communities Together Large programme. The funding delivered a one year project improving the skills & employment prospects for 36 unemployed adults aged 25+ who were refugees, asylum seekers or migrants.

The community-led project directly engaged 36 adult learners aged 25+, providing access to high-quality adult education combined with holistic needs assessments & wraparound support which improved their English language and functional skills, confidence, resilience, and sense of community.

45 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) were provided per individual, and were delivered to three cohorts of 12 learners over 15 hours per week for 3 weeks in the following topics:
● ESOL skills (15 GLH)
● IT skills (15 GLH)
● Job searching, applications and interview skills (10 GLH)
● Health and well-being (5 GLH)

Courses supported progression onto accredited learning & included matrix-accredited information advice and guidance (IAG) and support which improved participants' English, digital skills, well-being, mental health, and employment prospects.

ATN enrolled 36 learners who completed the programme with a 97% achievement rate which is 7% above the target rate. Assessments and ILP records were completed for each beneficiary, Inwards/outwards referrals data was kept of the referral and progression routes and Learner satisfaction surveys completed for each learner.

33% of learners moved into further accredited learning at ATN whilst 65% were either looking for work or had found employment.

We awarded a grant of £26,000 to Hounslow Education Business Charity (trading as Spark!) in June 2024, through the Projects for Young People programme, to deliver a ’Work Readiness’ programme to support 3 special schools’ Key Stage 4 (ages 14-16) students. The project worked with Year 10 and 11 students with moderate learning difficulties and/or autism, and who all have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

Young people with learning disabilities have more barriers to finding and sustaining employment, and the proportion of working age (18-64) NHS users with a learning disability in paid employment is low. In Ealing, only 2.2% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment and in Hounslow this number is 3.4%.

This project worked with young people who are most in need of support.

The programme included Spark! SEND Programmes Manager spending time in the schools getting to know the young people, building a safe and trusting relationship. This built confidence in the young people, and allowed them to begin, develop and improve their social interaction.

Two Industry insight site visits for each young person, to local businesses were organised, with each student spending up to 6 hours on site at a local business.

Each school benefited from 4 In-school communication and employability workshops on themes such as employability skills sought by employers, and types of jobs available in the local labour market, with each workshop involving up to 3 volunteers from local businesses (including Heathrow Airport and SEGRO plc).

The workshop themes were tailored to the needs of each cohort, but included themes of: Communication skills, Goal setting, Resilience and confidence, reflecting on strengths and weaknesses and interview skills.

The project also provided facilitated group mentoring workshops, using tailored resources from their 1:1 mentoring programmes delivered in mainstream schools. These group sessions involved employer volunteers and covered themes such as, goal-setting, planning for the future and leadership skills (all tailored around the individual young people's needs).

The project ended with a celebration/wrap up event attended by teachers, friends and parents/carers. The celebration event was a wonderful chance to highlight the change in the young people's social interaction, their connections to outside business volunteers, and their understanding of and confidence about future career opportunities. With certificates for each young person and volunteer, the volunteers also provided goody bags for each young person.

The project took place in Ealing and Hounslow and 174 young people were actively involved with 67 volunteers giving their time. 3 school and 8 businesses participated.

We awarded a grant of £7,100 to W4 Youth in December 2024 through the Projects for Young People programme.

The project was to provide additional sports and arts activities for 11-19 years olds in Ealing and Hounslow following feedback from members, the local community, and the police. To increase attendance from 160 to 250 per week plus provide three new activities including a new 'Train the Trainer’ programme to increase skills and employability.

The main project fit for the Young Peoples programme was the 'Learn, Grow & Thrive Project 2025' enabling young people aged 11-19 a unique opportunity in their community to develop their personal skills leading to volunteering and employment opportunities with W4 Youth or charity partners.

The project delivered Friday five-a side boys and girls football league for West London Youth Clubs –Years 6/7, 8/9 and 10/11 throughout term time and specific girls football training. As well as a 16 week ‘Train the Trainer’ programme supporting members with skills development and future employment. This programme was developed with an ex-member and Youth Board lead with personal experience of violence and the criminal justice system and now thriving as a Junior Coach, playing a lead role giving those who most need support the chance to learn key skills and qualifications.

The benefit to participants and the wider community has been brilliant and are keeping young people involved in competitive sport who would not usually be able to afford to be engaged in such activities.

The Train the Trainer programme has been the most incredible journey for W4 Youth. Ten young people signed up to the trial programme. All 10 completed the programme and there are now eight of them working with W4 Youth regularly as Junior Coaches. It has changed their lives and allowed W4 Youth to expand their activities organically over the past year. It was so successful that they ran a further TTT programme from September to December 2025 and following some project funding success we have just signed a further ten young people up for the January - April 2026 TTT programme.

5,000 actively involved and with a greater feeling of involvement.
20 young people achieving qualifications.
45 volunteer hours worked.

We awarded a two year grant of £10,000 to the Rah Rah Theatre Company on April 2024 through the Communities Together Small programme.

The project delivered four theatre shows, two to tour each year, and provided 8 performances of each show for free, with 32 altogether over the two years. The two shows in 2024 were Top Hat Tales, a musical love story based around the famous Broadway musical songs of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s and Summer Frolics done in the style of Britain’s old fashioned “holiday camp” entertainment.

A notable success was the level of engagement from audiences with complex needs, particularly people living with dementia and people with learning difficulties. Staff regularly reported that individuals who are usually withdrawn, non-verbal, or reluctant to participate became actively involved through singing, movement, and conversation. In several cases, venues told us that residents continued discussing the performances for days afterwards, indicating a lasting emotional and social impact rather than a one-off experience.

The primary target audiences for the project were the elderly and people with learning difficulties and they were involved in a creative activity that reduces loneliness, supports physical and mental health and helps to build and strengthen social ties. Sharing in watching a show with music, comedy and drama is a perfect way for the elderly (especially those suffering with dementia) to reconnect and bring some much-needed joy back into their lives.

A key success was the strength and sustainability of the Rah Rah Theatre Company’s relationships with venues across the Heathrow Community Trust target area. Many of the community and care centres visited had previously struggled to access arts provision due to cost, transport, or capacity. The opportunity to host free, high-quality performances enabled these venues to bring together multiple groups within their centres, strengthening community cohesion in ways that went beyond our initial expectations.

The project benefitted 1280 people, having a greater feeling of involvement.

What fantastic work by all involved. Thanks for mentioning Heathrow Community Trust.
