Our lives depend on a thin layer of soil

We were delighted to welcome around 35 locals to our community screening of last week, a thought‑provoking documentary on the potential of in the UK. This thin, top layer of earth is responsible for feeding eight billion people and sustaining life on our planet. Regenerative agriculture is about restoring soil health so we can continue to meet our future food needs, while mitigating the effects of the climate crisis, particularly droughts and floods.

The film explained our urgent need to produce food differently, while also telling the positive story about how regenerative practices tailored field-by-field can boost farmer yields and profitability.

In the film, three farmers share their early experiences of regenerative agriculture. It’s unnerving to hear the oft‑quoted stat that current soil quality will only support a further 40 harvests (the number quoted varies but the principle is clear – a clock is counting down and inaction isn’t an option). It’s also upsetting to see dedicated farmers forced into second jobs because margins are just so tight.

Still, it was encouraging to see such enthusiasm from both established farmers and newer entrants to farming, and the clear link between restoring land and farming in tune with nature to better mental health. It was also heartening to learn that soil health can be restored within seven years and see the farming community sharing best practices, from integrating livestock to experimenting with diverse rotations. This is an exciting time for this movement!

The call to action from the film and our panelists - regen farmer Jonathan Chapman from Native Beef and Andy Grant, CEO of Lindengate Charity - in our post‑film panel discussion was clear:

1. Rethink what and how you buy

2. Support local and regenerative producers via local farm shops and farmers markets

3. Pay a fair price for food

4. Find ways to help the next generation understand where food comes from

We encourage you to find a night this week to sit down with family or a friend to watch Six Inches of Soil - Journeyman Pictures – you won’t regret it.
