☀️ Centenary Weekend Days 3 & 4: What a Grand Finale! (If you weren't there, you truly missed out!) 👑✨

Wow, wow, wow! Our spectacular Centenary Weekend wrapped up in the most magnificent way, and we are still buzzing from it. Days 3 and 4 were packed with history, high society, exquisite food, and memories to last a lifetime. Here is exactly what went down on our unforgettable final stretch:

🚢 Day 3: Greenwich, Royal Teas & A Thames Cruise 🌊
The excitement kicked off bright and early with a 1:00am coach departure! To ensure our wonderful French delegates didn't miss a single detail, we used the clever Smartify app so they could listen to live French commentary on all the historical places we passed. Talk about premium service! 📲🇫🇷

11:15am: We arrived at a sun-drenched Greenwich Park and walked up to the iconic Royal Observatory for an incredible 1-hour private tour. 🔭🌟

11:30am – 12:30pm: A scenic stroll took us to the breathtaking Painted Hall for some individual exploring of the spectacular artwork. 🎨🏛️

1:30pm: Next stop, The Cutty Sark! We enjoyed a magnificent, traditional English Afternoon Tea right inside the cafe underneath the hull of the ship itself! 🥪☕ Afterwards, everyone had free reign to explore the majestic ship.

3:30pm: We boarded the City Cruises boat from Greenwich Pier and enjoyed a glorious, sunny 1-hour cruise down the River Thames, arriving at Westminster Pier at 4:50pm under beautiful blue skies! 🛥️🎡

By 6:00pm, the coach had us safely back in Welwyn Garden City... but the day wasn't over yet!

🥂 The Grand Farewell Dinner 🥢
At 8:00pm, we gathered for our Farewell Dinner at Hakalok, the fantastic Malaysian restaurant owned by our very own fellow Rotarian, Choon!

The drinks flowed, the food was absolutely exquisite, and the atmosphere was electric. Speeches were made in both French and English, celebrating 100 years of service and friendship.

An exciting plot was hatched! By the end of the evening, plans were officially set for an English delegation to travel to France as guests for Lucon’s 60th Club Anniversary in 2029! ✈️🇫🇷 No one wanted the evening to end!

🚂 Day 4: Au Revoir! 🥖
The following morning, after one final breakfast together, the hosts and our French delegates headed to the train station. There were plenty of hugs, smiles, and emotional waves as they departed.

This weekend perfectly captured exactly what being a part of Rotary is all about: international friendship, incredible experiences, community, and making a real difference while having the time of our lives. ❤️

🍽️ WGC Rotary Steps Across the District: Cake, Custard & Community Action! 🥧🍰

This week, our very own President-Elect (and District Membership Lead) Amanda Joseph paid a visit to our fantastic neighbours over at the Rotary Club of Dunstable—and what a wonderful afternoon of fellowship it was! Rotary Club of Dunstable

The meeting was brilliantly chaired by Dunstable's President-Nominee, Ian Saunders, and the hospitality was top-notch. Amanda was treated to a delicious, hearty lunch of cottage pie, followed by a classic sponge cake smothered in custard. The club secretary also kept everyone entertained with some brilliant stories from his recent visits to local Rotary clubs over in sunny Florida, USA! 🇺🇸✈️

🦁 The Rotary Childrens Fun Day Big Dunstable Project: Whipsnade Zoo!
With 22 members present, the room was buzzing with plans for their upcoming Club Handover, as well as the final logistics for the massive Rotary Children's Fun Day at Whipsnade Zoo. 🐘🚂

Because the zoo is right on their doorstep, Dunstable takes the lead on organising this incredible day out for children. They take care of all the heavy lifting and big logistics so that other clubs across the District can simply register, turn up, and give local kids a magical day out without the "faff" of planning it all from scratch! It's a brilliant team effort, and registrations are already opening for 2027 if your club wants to get involved next year!

🎒 Meanwhile, Right Here in Welwyn Garden City...
While Dunstable takes on the zoo, we’ve been busy working on our own localised version of the Rotary Children’s Fun Day! We are super excited to be partnering with the wonderful charity Kids In Mind to bring this special day to life. 🧩❤️ Kids in Mind Charity

We are joining forces with three of our amazing neighbouring clubs—the Rotary Clubs of Potters Bar, Hatfield, and Brookmans Park—to host a bespoke Fun Day for 115 fantastic students right here at Lakeside School. 🐾 Brookmans Park Rotary Club, Rotary Hatfield - England, Rotary District 1260 in Beds, Bucks and Herts organised by Barbara Middleton

We were all geared up to run the event yesterday (Thursday 11th June), but the British weather had other ideas! Due to the heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast, we had to make the tough call to postpone. ☔

The good news? We aren't letting the rain stop the fun! We’ve already rescheduled the entire event for Thursday 24th September, right at the start of the new academic term. We can't wait to bring the mobile petting zoo, smiles, and sunshine to the Lakeside pupils then! ☀️🐑

Whether it’s teaming up at the zoo or collaborating locally for our schools, it just goes to show what can be achieved when Rotary clubs work together.

🎷 Looking for something fun to do this weekend, music lovers? 🍔🍰

Our fantastic neighbouring club, The Hertford Rotary Club, is hosting their spectacular Summer Musical Festival this coming Sunday, 14th June, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm!

They are raising vital funds for Isabel Hospice—a wonderful charity that we also proudly supported just last week at our own Open Gardens event. Every little bit truly helps, so we would love to see the Welwyn Garden City community show them some support!

If you love live Jazz and easy-listening music, Bramfield is definitely the place to be this Sunday. ☀️

✨ What’s on the Menu?
🎵 Live Music: Enjoy brilliant sets from groups like Hoofie and the Bad Habits, alongside a fantastic lineup of other groups and singers.

🍔 Food & Drink: A delicious BBQ and a fully stocked mobile bar will be available.

☕ Special Treat: There will even be scrumptious cream teas to enjoy while you soak up the tunes!

📍 Where & When?
📅 Date: Sunday 14th June 2026

🕒 Time: 3:00pm – 7:00pm

📍 Location: Bramfield Village Community Hall (and adjacent field), Bury Lane, Bramfield, SG14 2QL.

🚗 Parking: Free signposted parking is available right next to the venue.

🎒 What to Bring
Just pack your favourite folding chairs or a picnic blanket, sit back, and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere! Admission is by donation (we suggest £5.00 per person, and younger children go free), with every single penny going straight to Isabel Hospice. Isabel Hospice

Let’s keep the incredible community momentum going after our big win last weekend. Grab your picnic blankets and head over to Bramfield for a beautiful afternoon of music! 🎷✨

🍰 Wow! What an Incredible Open Gardens Afternoon! 🌸

We are absolutely thrilled to share the final results from our recent Open Gardens event, and the response was nothing short of extraordinary. An amazing 654 people joined us to explore the beautiful local gardens, far exceeding all of our expectations!

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised a staggering grand total of £5,655.90!

These vital funds will be supporting some wonderful causes, including Isabel Hospice, Herts Young Homeless, and other local Rotary community projects.

💖 A Huge Thank You!
An event of this scale simply couldn't happen without a massive team effort. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to:

Our Wonderful Garden Owners: Thank you for opening up your beautiful spaces, welcoming the community, and making this day possible.

Our Fantastic Volunteers: A huge shout-out to the incredible team who worked tirelessly on the gates, the stalls, the teas, and behind the scenes. We absolutely couldn't have done this without you:

Anderona, Amanda Joseph, Amanda Critchley, Ian, John Norton, John Williams, Susan, Paolina, Janet, Jackie, Gill, and Marian.

Our volunteers were kept so beautifully busy looking after our guests that we only managed to snap a few limited photos on the day! However, you can catch a wonderful glimpse of the beautiful gardens and delicious tea spreads in the video recap below. 👇

☔ Important Update: Rotary Children’s Fun Day Postponed ☔

We are incredibly sad to announce that today’s Rotary Children’s Fun Day at Lakeside School has been cancelled due to the poor weather forecast.

The Rotary Clubs of Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Potters Bar, and Brookmans Park had an amazing day planned for 115 wonderful students, including a special mobile petting zoo where the children could experience and learn about a variety of animals.

While we are deeply disappointed that the weather stopped play today, the safety and comfort of the students and the animals come first!

The Good News?
We aren't letting the rain beat us! We are already working hard behind the scenes to reschedule the entire event for early September, right at the start of the new academic year.

Thank you all for your understanding and continued support. Stay dry today, and we look forward to bringing the fun (and the animals!) to Lakeside School very soon. 🐾 Brookmans Park Rotary Club, Rotary Hatfield - England ,

We were delighted to receive this wonderful message from Gill Sinnott, President of Brookmans Park Rotary Club, congratulating us on our 100th Anniversary! Rotary is all about fellowship and community, and it’s heartening to have the support of our neighbouring clubs as we celebrate this incredible milestone. Thank you, Gill and everyone at Brookmans Park, for your kind words and continued friendship.

Here’s to another century of making a difference in Welwyn Garden City and beyond! 🌍💪

More Centenary Love from our Neighbours! 🥳

A massive thank you to Andrew Picken, President of the Hatfield Rotary Club, for sending over this wonderful congratulatory message!

Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City have worked side-by-side on so many projects over the years, and we are thrilled to celebrate our 100th Anniversary with our fellow Rotarians just down the road.

Thank you, Andrew and all at Hatfield Rotary, for your kind words and partnership! 🤝✨ Rotary Hatfield - England

This has been quite a month for the Rotary Club of Welwyn Garden City. A month of celebration - for our 100th Year - A month of Fellowship - with our own Members and with those visiting from the Rotary Club of Lucon, Vendee, France. A month supporting many of the good causes that we raise funds for across Hertfordshire, nationally and abroad. The thanks of our Club Council go out to all Members, Friends and Volunteers that have given their time. Thank you all. We need you! (And we would welcome more of you - why not Join Rotary Today!?

Fundraising reached a pinnacle this last weekend, on Sunday June 7th, as we ran an Open Gardens event with the generous co-operation of five home owners in the Handside district of wonder WGC. The weather was fine and repaid all the preparations. Driven brilliantly by Organizer, Rtn. Sue Forrow, the five properties welcomed 650 (or possibly 700?) Visitors who paid entry fees, bought teas and cakes and bought raffle tickets in their hundreds. A plant/bulb stall sold out and everyone had a marvellous time.

An amazing afternoon raised £5,680 for local good causes, Isabel Hospice and Herts Young Homeless as well as other Rotary projects. Among those we include: Better Beginnings for Babies at Lister Hospital, Red Rubber Ball and many others. RYLA, Rotary's Young Leadership Awards will take our first Herts-based student for a while.

Well done and thank you again to everybody who contributed to the continuing success for Rotary in WGC.

Our next fundraising event will be the repeat of "Jazz on the Island" at Lemsford Village on July 4th. Make sure you're there.... it's a great evening!
