๐Ÿ’™ A Huge Thank You to Debra and Ali ๐Ÿ’™
Sometimes people come into your lives and leave you completely humbled.
Today, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to Debra and Ali, who have spent the last year raising funds for dementia charities, including our Portchester Hub.
Debra's mum attends our Wellbeing Group, and she has seen first-hand the difference that specialist dementia support can make to families. In return, she and Ali have taken on some incredible fundraising challenges to help ensure that support continues for others.
๐Ÿ… Last weekend, Debra travelled to Normandy to walk from Ouistreham to Pegasus Bridge and on to the D-Day landing beaches.
๐Ÿšด On 11th July, she will be cycling on a static bike from 7am until 5pm outside Soothills Bakery in Portchester.
๐Ÿช Then, in October, Debra and Ali will take on an extraordinary trek across the Sahara Desert.
Alongside these challenges, Debra has also placed Dementia Care Hub collection boxes in local businesses and is planning a final fundraising celebration event at her golf club.
Together they have already raised an incredible ยฃ9,500+ for dementia charities.
What makes this so special is that behind every mile walked, every pedal turned and every pound raised is a desire to help other families facing the challenges of dementia.
People like Debra and Ali help us continue providing support, friendship, advice and hope to local people living with dementia and those who care for them.
We honestly cannot thank them enough. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’ก Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

Labelling cupboards.
Adding signs to doors.
Keeping routines simple and familiar.

At our Waterside Hub, labelled cupboards mean Jenny can confidently help put things away after lunch.

๐Ÿ’™ She feels useful
๐Ÿ’™ She feels independent
๐Ÿ’™ She feels included

Supporting independence isnโ€™t always about big interventions โ€” often itโ€™s thoughtful little adjustments.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œWe didnโ€™t think groups were for usโ€ฆโ€

One of our members felt exactly the same.

It wasnโ€™t until Adult Services suggested looking at residential care that he and his wife realised they couldnโ€™t keep managing alone.

He came to our Wellbeing Group once a week:
๐Ÿ’™ He made a good friend
๐Ÿ˜Š He enjoyed the sessions
๐ŸŒฟ His wife got valuable time to recharge

Support doesnโ€™t mean giving up independence.

Often, it helps people stay at home longer, with the right guidance, planning and community around them. This time allowed them to research residential care and make planned decisions about the future.

๐Ÿ’™ What support do we actually offer at The Dementia Care Hub?

We know that after a dementia diagnosis, many families are left asking:
๐Ÿ‘‰ What happens now?
๐Ÿ‘‰ Where do we go for help?
๐Ÿ‘‰ How do we keep going?

Thatโ€™s why we exist.
At the Dementia Care Hub, we support both people living with dementia and the people who care for them.

Across our Totton, Portchester and Waterside hubs, we offer:
โ˜• Weekly Social Groups

Friendly spaces to chat, meet others and feel less alone.

๐ŸŒฟ Wellbeing Activity Days
Meaningful activities, cognitive stimulation and social connection for people living with dementia - while carers get valuable time to themselves.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Carers Support Groups
A safe place to ask questions, share experiences and talk honestly with others who understand.

๐Ÿ“ž Welfare & Support Calls
Regular check-ins for carers who may be struggling, isolated or needing extra support.

๐Ÿงญ Advice, signposting and practical support
Including help with referrals, forms, future planning and accessing financial support.

Everything we do is based around:
๐Ÿ’™ Connection
๐Ÿ’™ Dignity
๐Ÿ’™ Identity
๐Ÿ’™ Helping families feel supported through the changes dementia brings

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œThereโ€™s nothing wrong with meโ€ฆ I never get angry.โ€

We hear things like this more often than you might think.

For some people, a dementia diagnosis is accepted.

For others, it doesnโ€™t feel real, or it feels too frightening to face.

And what can look like denialโ€ฆ
is often something much deeper:
๐Ÿ’ญ Fear
๐Ÿ’ญ Confusion
๐Ÿ’ญ A way of protecting themselves

This can be one of the hardest stages for families to navigate.
๐Ÿ‘‰ How do you support someone who doesnโ€™t see what youโ€™re seeing?
๐Ÿ‘‰ How do you have those conversations?
๐Ÿ‘‰ How do you keep going when it feels so difficult?

You donโ€™t have to figure it out on your own.

At the Dementia Care Hub, we support carers through these early, uncertain stages - with understanding, practical advice, and a space to talk openly.

And importantly:
๐Ÿ’™ You donโ€™t need a diagnosis to come along.

If you - or someone you know - is experiencing:
๐Ÿง  Memory changes
๐Ÿ’ฌ Personality changes
๐Ÿ˜” Things that just donโ€™t feel quite right

You are always welcome at our drop-in sessions.
No pressure. No expectations. Just support.

๐Ÿ’™ Dementia is hard, getting support shouldnโ€™t be.

๐Ÿ“ž You can call us for a chat or simply come along. Every journey with dementia is different, but whatever you are experiencing, we have seen it before ๐Ÿ’™

New to dementia? Feeling overwhelmed? You are not alone.
Our Online Carers Support Session is a safe, understanding space where carers can:
๐Ÿ’™ Ask questions
๐Ÿ’™ Share experiences
๐Ÿ’™ Talk honestly about how things really feel
๐Ÿ’™ Hear from others going through similar situations
๐Ÿ’™ Be guided by our Admiral Nurse, Fiona Chaabane

You donโ€™t need to be โ€œat breaking pointโ€ to come along.
You donโ€™t need to know all the right words.
And you absolutely donโ€™t need to face this on your own.

Whether youโ€™re right at the beginning of the journey or further along, you are very welcome.

Next meeting: Wednesday 17th June, 6pm-7:30pm

Not everyone who needs support will ever see this post.

We first met A + J the week they sold Jโ€™s car.

After nearly 60 years of driving, it was a huge moment.

A loss of independence. A shift in daily life.

With Aโ€™s physical health challenges, Jโ€™s dementia and no transport, things quickly became harder.

No family nearby.
No local friends.

And like many older couples - no email address, no social media.
The kind of people who need support the mostโ€ฆ
are often the hardest to reach.

With support from Exxon Mobil Fawley, weโ€™ve been able to:
๐Ÿš• Arrange a weekly taxi to our Waterside Drop-In
๐Ÿ“„ Help with application forms
๐Ÿงญ Make referrals for support at home

Now, they have somewhere to go.
People to talk to.
A connection to their community again.
They even did their first online shop last week!

For A + J, our hub has become a lifeline.
But there are so many more people just like them.
People quietly struggling behind closed doors.
People who donโ€™t know support exists.
People who will never find us online.

๐Ÿ’™ Dementia is hard, getting support shouldnโ€™t be.

๐Ÿ“ข Please help us reach them.
Ask your Hub Manager for posters to put up in any community spaces you go to

Talk to neighbours.
Mention us to someone you know.

Because sometimes, the right conversation at the right time can change everything ๐Ÿ’™
