Half Moon Community CIC Half Moon Community provides well-being, experiences, learning opportunities, and access to nature for diverse people of all ages.

These opportunities aim to promote greater mental and physical health through gathering together to support nature. Half Moon Field has been growing into Half Moon Community since 2015. In December 2024 we became a community interest company. We are a core group of 12 and a community of many more who tend the land here at Half Moon Field. In 2025 we hold a weekly (currently Sunday) gardening club looking after the veg and soft fruit - open to everyone - share in the harvest! We run and host a family and children's group, seasonal celebrations, and storytelling, and singing and crafts events on the land. We grow herbs for medicine and have a forest gardening project, a cut flowers project and a sacred sanctuary space hosting ceremony and sharing circles. Our community conservation days see local people learning how to map, tend and care for woodland and biodiverse meadow habitats.

🌙🦇 Half Moon Bat & Moth Walk 🦋✨
Saturday 29th August | 8–10pm

As the sun sets and the field begins to enter its nighttime world, join us for an evening of discovery and wonder at Half Moon.

Together, we’ll explore different areas of the field and learn more about some of our most fascinating nocturnal residents: bats and moths. 🦇🌙🦋

Using bat detectors, we’ll tune into the mysterious ultrasonic calls of bats—sounds that are usually beyond the range of human hearing—and discover who might be flying above us as darkness falls.

We’ll also spend time looking out for the beautiful and diverse world of moths, uncovering some of the hidden wildlife that comes alive after dark. ✨

🔦 Please arrive from 7:45pm so we can begin at 8pm sharp.
Don’t forget to bring a torch and dress appropriately for an evening outdoors.

🍵 Afterwards, we’ll gather for tea, snacks, and a chance to share our discoveries.

Half Moon Community is extremely proud and chuffed to announce that we are recipients of a South West Water Nature Recovery Fund small grant for our Micro Wetland project!

We will be inviting everyone to get involved as we create the new pond and scrapes this Autumn, working with local specialists SAS Aquatics - Wildlife & Pond Services Devon. Our Young Nature Watchers and community volunteers will be surveying the emerging wetland to monitor nature recovery and changes to water storage over the next two years. Get in touch to stay in the loop for events.

You perhaps wouldn't know it in these parched conditions, but Half Moon is historically known as a 'wet field' in this locality. In wet conditions water funnels through and flows down the site into the Bidwell Brook. In these times of extreme weather it's more important than ever to slow runoff and keep water higher in the landscape to benefit everyone, including aquatic and wetland species, of which we will be expecting many more of on the field once the micro wetland is in place.

🌾✨ Lammas Ceremony & Celebration at Half Moon ✨🌾

As the first harvest festival of the year approaches, we warmly invite you to gather with us to celebrate Lammas (Lughnasadh) — a time of gratitude for the fertility, growth, and abundance that the land and our community create together.

🕒 Schedule

3:00pm — Gathering in the Forest Garden. We’ll meet in the Forest Garden and then process together to the feasting area, where you can leave your belongings and any offerings of food.

4:00pm — Ceremonial Procession to the Sanctuary Together we will walk to the Sanctuary to offer thanks for the fertility, growth, and life that the land and this community nurture. We’ll reciprocate our gratitude through song, movement, and dance, so come ready to participate in whatever way feels comfortable for you.

5:00pm — Shared Feast. We’ll return to the feasting area to enjoy shared food, drinks, and good company.

7:00pm — Tidy Up & Closing We’ll close the formal gathering and help leave the space beautiful.

🔥 Optional hearth fire: For those who would like to linger a little longer, a small hearth fire will be lit for quiet conversation and evening connection on the land.

🌿 Please bring: 🍞 A vegetarian dish, snack, or drink to share for the feast 🥄 Your own plate, bowl, cup, and cutlery (to help us reduce waste) 🌸 Optional seasonal offerings for the Sanctuary, such as flowers, herbs, seeds, fruit, or something handmade 🧥 Layers and anything you need to stay comfortable outdoors

🌿 Half Moon Community Land Day – Saturday 23rd 🌿

Our next Community Land Day is coming up next Saturday — a chance to come together for a few hours of hands-on care for the field and the wider ecosystem around it.

Together we’ll be harvesting hazel, restoring hedgerows, creating wildlife habitat, processing wood, and tending the stream. It’s a beautiful opportunity to learn practical land skills, spend time outdoors, and contribute to the ongoing stewardship of this special place.

There’ll also be plenty of time to connect, share stories, and enjoy lunch with fellow land-lovers. 🍂✨

We’re looking for new members to join our growing (and glowing!) biodynamic veg project at Half Moon Field, near Tigley.

Come be part of a small, friendly group gathering weekly on Sunday mornings for a few hours of hands-in-the-earth growing. Seeds are already sprouting, and the garden is coming to life—this is the perfect moment to step in.

This will be our first community day after the Spring Equinox, and the land is fully awakened to the vibrancy of the season.

Come along from 10am to get involved in a range of seasonal tasks. It’s a beautiful opportunity to connect, contribute, and spend time outdoors in good company. Tea and lunch provided.

Whether you join for a few hours or stay the day, everyone is welcome. Bring weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and a willingness to get your hands in the earth. 🌱✨
