Half Moon Community CIC

Half Moon Community CIC Half Moon Community provides well-being, experiences, learning opportunities, and access to nature for diverse people of all ages.

These opportunities aim to promote greater mental and physical health through gathering together to support nature. Half Moon Field has been growing into Half Moon Community since 2015. In December 2024 we became a community interest company. We are a core group of 12 and a community of many more who tend the land here at Half Moon Field. You can see some our timeline and past events here: https:/

In 2025 we hold a weekly (currently Sunday) gardening club looking after the veg and soft fruit - open to everyone - share in the harvest! We run and host a family and children's group, seasonal celebrations, and storytelling, and singing and crafts events on the land. We grow herbs for medicine and have a forest gardening project, a cut flowers project and a sacred sanctuary space hosting ceremony and sharing circles. Our community conservation days see local people learning how to map, tend and care for woodland and biodiverse meadow habitats.

Half Moon welcomed local nature lovers at the weekend for the first of our Wild About Devon - Supporting Community Action for Nature Young Nature Watchers series of Spring nature connection events for children and teens at Half Moon Field.

11 local children and adults got together to monitor our newly installed Woodstone bird boxes and the surrounding hedges and copses for early season bird action. Recorded sightings included great t**s, wrens and robins. Bird calls identified included pipits, firecrest and an elusive Bidwell Brook kingfisher!

We also hunted for last year's harvest mouse and vole nests amongst the tussocks - with children finding examples of both during the afternoon, with input from our resident harvest mouse expert Carol Asuray. More events are planned for later in the Spring, where local children will be recording who nests in the boxes. Stay tuned for more details.

Warm thanks to Devon Communities Together for funding this project!

🌿 Wild About Devon – Young Nature Watchers at Half Moon Field 🌿

We’re excited to launch a new series of hands-on nature connection events for young people (ages 10+), set in the beautiful Half Moon field just outside Dartington.

This project invites children and teens to actively take part in real conservation work while deepening their relationship with the natural world. It’s family-friendly, outdoors, and rooted in curiosity, care, and community.

✨ What we’ll be doing together:

Monitoring our bird boxes through the spring β€” observing nest building, eggs, and (hopefully!) chicks.

Searching for harvest mouse nests and contributing data to the Southwest Harvest Mouse Survey, feeding into the national citizen science database.

Learning how to notice, record, and protect the wildlife around us.

✨ Upcoming sessions (ages 10+, parent/guardian required):

πŸ“… Saturday 7th March, 2:30pm
β€’ First check of the bird boxes β€” early nest activity
β€’ Harvest mouse nest survey

πŸ“… Saturday 21st March, 2:30pm
β€’ Follow-up bird box investigation β€” nest building, eggs, or sitting birds

πŸ“… Saturday 4th April, 2:30pm
β€’ Watching adults feed chicks β€” counting feeding visits to understand their daily activity

πŸ•‘ Schedule for each session:
β€’ Arrivals & welcome: 2:00pm
β€’ Conservation activities: 2:15–3:15pm
β€’ Close: 3:30pm

This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to get their hands in the earth, develop real ecological skills, and feel part of something meaningful.

✨ Imbolc Blessings from Half Moon Community ✨
On the 31st of January, we gathered to welcome the first stirrings of spring, that quiet yet powerful moment when the earth begins to wake beneath our feet.

Together we lit our Imbolc fire spiral, its glowing path mirroring the returning light and the gentle re-awakening of the land. Standing around the flames, we offered our intentions for the season ahead: renewal, clarity, creativity, and the courage to grow in new directions.

Thank you to everyone who joined, shared stories, sowed seeds, and brought their warmth to the celebration.
Here’s to longer days, fertile soil, and the slow unfurling of spring. 🌱✨

We came together to build a dead hedge in the orchard with willow and hazelβ€” a simple, beautiful structure that will give refuge to insects and wildlife (and a bit more interest for our roaming chickens!) πŸŒΏπŸ“βœ¨

We were blessed to have Devon Wildlife Trust'S Lynne Kenderdine visit the Field in January to advise on how we can best enhance habitats for our non-human inhabitants, plus manage the copious water on the land in ways that best support biodiversity across the whole site. Thanks Lynne!!
