The International Rally which was held in the Barnstaple Hotel on Tuesday 5th May 2026. As District 17’s ISO Jeannette has hurt her ribs, Deirdre was invited to represent her as the Chairman. There was a very interesting talk by Roger Ireland about how the Mary’s Meals charity started and developed to now be feeding over three million children a day worldwide. The lunch was delicious and the raffle raised a good sum and was full of lovely prizes donated by all the clubs.

As part of our monthly meeting on Monday, at the end of our Conference reports we had a short art session thanks to Deirdre. Members and our visitor Kelly- set to the task of imagining images from three blobs of colour. They all achieved clever ideas, surprising themselves in some cases. Then they pushed a pebble around the paper and were asked to see if they could make an image from that. There were a lot of stunning results and with some colours they would all make lovely designs. Well done everyone.

On Monday we were pleased to welcome Kelly from
Joey and Kelly- Community Builders for Chelston, Cockington & Livermead to our monthly meeting, and to celebrate two members who have each been part of Inner Wheel for 50 years!

Edna has been a member in Torquay, then Truro in Cornwall and now Torquay again. She introduced Joan to the club. Joan lived in Switzerland and Nairobi and kept her Torquay membership going and is now back in Torquay.

Congratulations to Edna and Joan for their 50 years each of Inner Wheel.

As part of the GB&I Inner Wheel conference in Llandudno, Inner Wheel Torquay was pleased to take part in this fashion challenge! There were a lot of long centenary scarves left over from two years ago. The Association had the bright idea of issuing a challenge to all GB&I Inner Wheel members to make a garment using at least two scarves. Patrick Grant who was our final speaker on day two of the conference was to choose the four he liked the best. Due to organisational problems he had very little time and the seventeen entrants were disappointed not to show off their creations on the stage. There were some beautiful garments made using only the scarves and haberdashery necessary. The runners up were all given Inner Wheel notebooks. It was a fun challenge.

A busy month for the Inner Wheel Club of Torquay

February has been a busy month with preparations to go to the GB&I Annual Conference, this year being held in Llandudno.

On Thursday 12th February District Chairman Deirdre visited the Inner Wheel Club of Dartmouth, where she enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Stoke Lodge Hotel in Stoke Fleming. This was followed by a very interesting meeting. Thank you President Jenny for inviting me, it was good to meet up with your members again. It was a bright Spring Day after weeks of rain with verges covered in snowdrops and daffodils. The hotel has been renovated and is delightful. The club has a new member and they are all very busy helping others as usual.

On Monday 16th February Torquay’s International Officer Sandra hosted Peter Reid and we were pleased to welcome members of Inner Wheel Dartmouth. Peter is well known for his amazing work helping and promoting Shelterbox. He gave a fascinating insight into the wonderful country of Nepal. He termed it a “low income country” which has skilled craftsmen and women. They have been busy repairing and rebuilding after the devastating earthquake in 2014 and the temples in Kathmandu are better lit than before. Peter and his wife spent a lot of time in Nepal, as workers for VSO and delivering supplies to schools through Rotary such as science equipment. He is well worth listening to if you get the chance and his slides were beautiful. The club presented him with a cheque for his charity. Thank you Peter so much for the amusing afternoon.

At the end of the meeting members enjoyed singing songs from around the world, led by Patricia. The club secretary Jane sourced Nepalese recipes from the internet and produced tasty biscuits flavoured with fennel and cardamon, and sweets with pecan nuts on top. They were delicious.

Our clubs all need new members so please get in touch. We meet at the Livermead House Hotel, Torquay on the second Monday of the month. For more details please contact us by email: [email protected], phone: 07919455278 and follow us on Facebook: search for Inner Wheel Torquay

On Monday 12th January Torquay held their celebration of Inner Wheel Day at the Livermead House Hotel, which is celebrated by Inner Wheel clubs worldwide at this time of year. Members met for a friendship day, clipping and sorting stamps, making labels from old Christmas cards and enjoying meeting up after the Christmas break.

After lunch, District Chairman Deirdre talked a little about her past and her enjoyable journey in the Inner Wheel of Torquay, which she joined thirty years ago. She emphasised the need for local publicity to enlarge the membership, asking all members to help with this. She also explained the district challenge which she is revealing to each club as she visits them. President Jeannette presented her with a bouquet of tulips which she liked very much.

Thank you, Association President Pam, for featuring a photo of District 17’s Orange the World walk inTorquay on 25th November at the start of the OTW campaign and before mulled wine and an early Christmas lunch. Many thanks to the walkers and the ladies who ran the table sale in the hotel. Good luck with your fundraising for the Ronald Macdonald homes Pam.
