The Compost Hunter: The Unseen Guardian of the Garden
Beneath the steaming, decaying layers of a garden compost heap, a large-eyed Wood Mouse darts through the darkness, snatching a plump slug before it can reach the emerging spring shoots.

Many assume that all mice are simply pests that raid seed stores and destroy crops. In reality, the native Wood Mouse is a fierce, highly effective micro-predator.

Contrary to popular belief, these mice do not hibernate. Right now, during the cold, barren 'hungry gap' of March, seeds and berries are incredibly scarce. To survive, they rely heavily on the decaying matter and retained warmth of garden compost heaps, hunting protein-rich slugs, snails, and overwintering insect larvae.

They are the unsung heroes of ecological balance. A healthy population acts as a natural pest control system, silently managing the invertebrates that decimate our early spring seedlings.

For a highly effective, natural gardening hack, strictly avoid chemical rodenticides. These poisons travel directly up the food chain, devastating vital predators like owls and hedgehogs. Instead, simply ensure your compost bin has a small access gap at the base.

Protecting these wide-eyed foragers creates a thriving, balanced ecosystem. Let the hidden hunters work their magic.

A winter walk on Stoodley Knowle meadow. A bit muddy round the edges, still beautiful.
