Mumbles Community Council working together to represent the people of Mumbles. The main instigator, Mr. Victor Carney, together with Mrs. Val Bevan, Mrs.

In 1889 Oystermouth Urban District Council was established and was responsible for local administration until it voted in 1918 to hand over its powers to Swansea. It ceased to exist in 1923 and Oystermouth and Mumbles came under the direct control of Swansea. Many in the area regretted the loss of administrative autonomy, so, when the opportunity arose in the 1980’s, there was wide support for the establishment of a Community Council. Peggy Jones, Mr. Maurice Edwards and Mr. Werner Sivertson, amongst others, campaigned hard to bring this about. They were successful and in 1983 Mumbles Community Council came into being under the Chairmanship of Werner Sivertson. The first Clerk to the Council, Mr. Peter Douglas – Jones was succeeded by Mrs. Liz Taylor, Mr. John Pickard (who held the post for 15 years) and Mr. Alastair Wilson. The present Clerk is Mr. Steve Heydon. At first, Mumbles Community Council led a peripatetic existence, holding its meetings in various schools and halls, until it leased an office in Walters Crescent in April 1997. The Community Council wards and the number of councillors for each are Mayals (3), Newton (4), Oystermouth (5) and West Cross (6). Over the years, they have worked together to represent the people of Mumbles, support local organisations, improve the street scene and the environment and provide enhanced services. The work of the Council is funded by the precept – a relatively small amount paid by domestic council tax payers to enable the Community Council to carry out its work. Large projects, such as the improvements around Bracelet Bay, have been delivered through working arrangements with the City and County of Swansea; such agreements are likely to increase in the future as more powers are devolved to community councils.

Remembering Aberfan. Cofio Aberfan.

Today marks 60 years since the Aberfan disaster, one of the darkest days in Welsh history.

On the 21st of October 1966, a coal spoil tip collapsed onto the village of Aberfan, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes. Tragically, 144 lives were lost, including 116 children and 28 adults.

Six decades on, the tragedy remains deeply etched in the hearts and memories of communities across Wales and beyond.

Today, we remember those who lost their lives and stand in remembrance with the families and community of Aberfan.

60 years on, we remember.

🌱Join our Mumbles Community Council Environmental Volunteers for a litter pick around Mumbles at 10am on Sunday the 25th of October - meeting at Ostreme Centre 🌱

A little rain won’t stop us from making a difference! Join Mumbles Community Council and our wonderful environmental volunteers for a morning of community action.

We all know the Welsh weather can be a little unpredictable, but a few raindrops won’t dampen our spirits! Grab your waterproofs, pull on your wellies and join us for a refreshing morning outdoors, helping to keep Mumbles clean, green and beautiful.

Whether you’re a regular volunteer or joining us for the first time, this is a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people, enjoy some fresh sea air and give something back to our local environment.

We’ll be meeting at the Ostreme Centre at 10:00am, where volunteers can collect litter-picking equipment before we head towards Oyster Square, the surrounding areas and along Mumbles Promenade. We’ll finish by 12:00pm.

What You Need to Know
Meeting point: Ostreme Centre, Mumbles
Time: 10:00am – 12:00pm
Route: Oyster Square, Mumbles Promenade and surrounding areas
Equipment: Litter pickers, bags and bag hoops will be provided.
Gloves: Limited availability, so please bring your own if possible.
What to wear: Waterproofs, sturdy footwear or wellies, and plenty of layers! We’re expecting some rain, so come prepared to embrace the Welsh weather.
Everyone is welcome! Children must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian.

Please note: The event is intended to go ahead in wet weather, but may be postponed if conditions are unsafe.

💗☕ Coffee with Friends – A Sea of Pink!

Today’s special Coffee with Friends session at the Ostreme was all about coming together, sharing a cuppa and continuing to show our support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With a lovely pink theme, it was wonderful to see everyone joining in, spreading awareness and enjoying the weekly session.

A huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers for their time and dedication in making the session so special, and to everyone who attended and supported this important cause.

🔧 Another fantastic Repair Cafe at Underhill Hub this morning! ♻️

A busy morning with 8 items repaired, 6 garden tools and scissors sharpened, and one fault identified! The owner now knows which spare part to buy, and the team will fit it at next month’s session.

Fantastic work by the dedicated volunteers for sharing their skills and saving items from going to waste.

Please come and join us at the next Repair Cafe at Underhill Hub on Friday 13th November at 10 am.

WellFest 2026 💛🌿

What. A. Weekend.

From peaceful moments under the trees to packed-out workshops, creativity, movement, nature, conversations, families, local businesses and a whole lot of community spirit — WellFest brought Mumbles together in the most wonderful way.

Across our venues, we welcomed over 50 incredible practitioners, each bringing something different to a weekend dedicated to mind, body & earth. 🌿

Seeing people of all ages trying something new, slowing down, connecting with others and simply enjoying everything our community has to offer was exactly what WellFest was all about.

A HUGE thank you to every practitioner, volunteer, venue, local business and member of the community who helped make it happen — and, of course, to everyone who came along. 💛

And these photos are only the beginning… 📸 with loads more to come!
