1st - 7th June marks Volunteers’ Week, and we want to take a moment to recognise and celebrate the incredible people who give their time, skills, energy and compassion to support us here at Our Place.

From our Directors, who help guide our work, Advisors who support our community, Peer Mentors offering encouragement, understanding and lived experience to those supporting events and fundraising every contribution makes a difference.

Volunteers are at the heart of what we do. Your dedication strengthens our community, helps us reach more people, and creates lasting impact in ways both seen and unseen.

Thank you for everything you do. We appreciate your time, commitment and passion this week and every week.

Today, we were delighted to host our networking event in our own building, bringing together 17 professionals from across a range of organisations to discuss local challenges, share ideas, upcoming events, and explore how we can better support the Sutton Coldfield community.

It was great to hear about new projects and initiatives already taking shape, and to see just how much partnership working is happening across the locality.

If you’re part of the VCFSE and would like to join our networking mailing list, please get in touch at [email protected]

đź“… Our next networking meeting will take place on 17th June 2026 at Advocacy Matters.

This Dementia Awareness Week, we are highlighting the importance of raising understanding, reducing stigma, and supporting people living with dementia, along with their families and carers.

The aim of the week is to encourage greater awareness of the condition, promote early diagnosis, and ensure people feel supported, included, and connected within their communities. Small changes in understanding and kindness can make a big difference to those affected.

We were delighted to welcome Rachel Kane from the Alzheimer's Society to our coffee morning, where she shared valuable insight and information to help us all gain a better understanding of dementia and how it impacts individuals and families.

A huge thank you to Rachel for taking the time to speak with us and for helping to increase awareness and confidence in supporting those living with dementia.

Together, we can create more dementia-friendly communities where everyone feels seen, supported, and included.

Beth and Aphra were at Birmingham City University yesterday, training a new cohort of mentors joining the Pathway to Potential mentoring service.

When asked why they wanted to become a mentor we had some powerful replies...

“I am passionate about helping young people. They’re our future- providing a strong foundation for them is crucial. We need to nurture them.”

“I remember a time when I received support, and it had such a big impact on my life. Children are vulnerable, and it would be great to give back and give them the opportunity to flourish.”

If you want to learn more about the Pathway to Potential service, please visit our website Mentoring - Our Place Support

Thank you to BSL Silver CIC for coming and delivering an introduction to BSL for some community members, assets and professionals working in the local area.

A great session was had by all, learning how to greet each other, spelling our names and understanding a short conversation.
