Halfpenny Green Air Scouts (HGAS) are based at Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green Airport (formerly Halfpenny Green Airport) near Bobbington in Staffordshire. We run Beavers, Cubs,
Scouts and Explorers sessions for children and young people aged between 5 and 18 years. We are the only Air Scout Group in the West Mercia County based on an airfield. Official affiliation with the RAF since 1973 allows us to offer flying, air and aeronautical activities in addition to the usual scouting pursuits, a great privilege granted to only 40 Air Scout Groups in the country. We are a very active Group at all levels, with well-attended weekly meetings offering theoretical and practical sessions based in the Scout Hut; activities using our outdoor equipment including the 10m air rifle range, archery range and a climbing wall; and sessions based on facilities at the airport including visiting the Air Control Tower and flights in helicopters and aeroplanes. We also arrange outreach activities such as weekend and week-long camps for all age groups, participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the chance to represent the West Mercia Scouts region in jamborees worldwide. One of our Scouts recently achieved Queen’s Scout, the highest youth award achievable in the scouting movement in the Commonwealth. We are also proud to attend local church services as a troop for Remembrance Day and take part in the local St George’s Day Parade at Mary Stevens Park in Stourbridge. We have an enthusiastic and committed group of Leaders, Assistant Leaders, Youth Leaders and volunteers who willingly give up their time to make the scouting experience for our youngsters educational, rewarding and exciting whilst embracing the ethos of the Scouts organisation. All our leaders are volunteers, are fully DBS checked and trained by the Scouts organisation. In addition to our Leaders, we have a number of enthusiastic volunteers from the children’s parents who help out when required. Our young people are extremely proud to be members of the Group and are always a credit to themselves, the Leaders, their parents and the Scouts.
