It's Volunteers' Week this week and we want to say a massive THANK YOU to our volunteers here at SCCG. We are always looking for new volunteers to join our Friendly Visitor Service, without them we couldn't do what we do! There are so many voluntary opportunities out there but here's why one of our lovely volunteer visitors chose us.

Volunteering as a befriender is such a rewarding experience and a wonderful way to build a meaningful friendship.
I visit a wonderful lady D, who is 92 years old and lives alone.
We usually spend our time chatting over a cup of tea. We often go out for lunch or visit a garden centre or anywhere that gets D out and about. D has lived an incredible life, and I always come away having learned something new or laughed at one of her sharp observations. We talk about everything from family and her life to how much the world has changed over the years.
I volunteer because I think companionship is incredibly important. A simple visit and a friendly conversation can make a real difference to someone who may not see many people. But the truth is that I get just as much from our visit as D does. Spending time with her is a privilege, and I always leave feeling uplifted.

Great little community project 😊

Great little community project 😊

Good news — starting next week beginning of June we’re increasing our opening days and changing our operating hours to give more people the chance to come along on different days and times.

Looking for somewhere to get out of the house, keep busy, and meet a good bunch of people?

Why not come along to our Men in Sheds group — a friendly and welcoming place where men can socialise, make new friends, share skills, enjoy a brew together, and simply have a good chat in good company.

Our new opening hours will be:

* Tuesday: 15:30 – 20:00
* Wednesday: 10:00 – 15:00
* Thursday: 10:30 – 14:00

We hope these extra sessions and new times will make it easier for you to take that first step, come down, have a chat, enjoy a brew, get involved, and feel part of the group.

☀️ Heat can be dangerous for older people – let’s look out for each other.
As temperatures rise, older people are at increased risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Age can affect how the body regulates temperature, and some health conditions or medications can make it harder to stay cool.

💛 Please take a moment to check in on older neighbours, friends, and family members – a quick call or knock on the door can make a big difference.

✅ Top tips to help older people stay cool:

1. Stay hydrated 💧
Encourage regular drinks throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Water, squash, or milk are ideal—limit alcohol and caffeine.

2. Keep homes cool 🏠
Close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day and open windows in the evening when it’s cooler. Using a fan can also help circulate air.

3. Avoid the midday heat 🌤️
Plan activities for early morning or evening, and wear loose, lightweight clothing when it’s hot.
