It's Volunteers' Week this week and we want to say a massive THANK YOU to our volunteers here at SCCG. We are always looking for new volunteers to join our Friendly Visitor Service, without them we couldn't do what we do! There are so many voluntary opportunities out there but here's why one of our lovely volunteer visitors chose us.
Volunteering as a befriender is such a rewarding experience and a wonderful way to build a meaningful friendship.
I visit a wonderful lady D, who is 92 years old and lives alone.
We usually spend our time chatting over a cup of tea. We often go out for lunch or visit a garden centre or anywhere that gets D out and about. D has lived an incredible life, and I always come away having learned something new or laughed at one of her sharp observations. We talk about everything from family and her life to how much the world has changed over the years.
I volunteer because I think companionship is incredibly important. A simple visit and a friendly conversation can make a real difference to someone who may not see many people. But the truth is that I get just as much from our visit as D does. Spending time with her is a privilege, and I always leave feeling uplifted.
