Second Helpings - Stamford

Second Helpings - Stamford Saving food. Serving people. Strengthening the community. We're open every Saturday from 12-3 behind Barn Hill Methodist Church.

Second Helpings are dedicated to ensuring that no food is wasted within our local area and that every member of our community has access to both nourishment and dignity. Inspired by Adam Smith's 'Junk Food Cafe' in Leeds, and frustrated at the amount of good food wasted whilst people go hungry, Second Helping Stamford opened in October 2015. We take perfectly edible raw materials from a number of

supporters around Stamford and create delicious and wholesome meals. We have a great volunteer network, but we could always do with more! Please email us if you'd like to help.

Every Saturday, fuelled on copious cups of tea, our volunteer cooks chop, prep, beat, fry and steam fresh ingredients to create a delicious menu to serve at our Community Cafe.

They give up their Saturday mornings to ensure people in our community can enjoy a healthy hot lunch, derived from surplus food collected by other dedicated Second Helpings volunteers.

And this Saturday will be no different. Today there'll be a soup. meaty main and a veggie option, with indulgent puddings for afters. All available on a pay as you feel basis.

We from 12-1.30pm at Stamford's Barn Hill Methodist Church. And everyone and anyone is welcome.

Every Saturday in our Community Café, our volunteers serve up a freshly prepared 3 course meal.

Made using surplus food, cooked with care, and open to everyone. It’s about more than just what’s on the plate.

Because a meal shared is more than food. It’s connection, conversation, and community.

We’d love to see you this Saturday.

You can be part of this

Second Helpings only works because of people.

Volunteers who give their time.
Donors who help make it possible.
Partners who support the mission.
And everyone who chooses to get involved in their own way.

Together, that’s what turns surplus food into something meaningful for the community.

Every bit of help matters and there’s always a place for you.

If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you.

Simple. But powerful.

Second Helpings is built on a clear idea:

Collect → Sort → Cook → Share

Surplus food is collected, sorted by volunteers, turned into meals, and shared with people in our community who need it most.

Behind that simple process is something bigger: people giving their time, local partners working together and a shared belief that good food should never go to waste.

Built by volunteers. Powered by community. Focused on food that deserves better.

Morning Stamford,

🌞 Banish the rainy day blues with a stroll to Barn Hill Methodist Church from a delicious lunch at the Second Helpings Community Cafe.

🍉 As always our cooks have prepped a nutritious 3-course meal made from surplus ingredients collected by our dedicated team of volunteers last night from Stamford supermarkets and suppliers.

🥬 The Pantry is open until 1pm serving fresh supplies, so you can stock up on breads, pasties and fruit and veg. Everything is supplied on a pay-as-you-feel basis.

See you down there!

It's Volunteer's Week a time to thank the people who give their time generously to make such a difference to their communities.

At Second Helpings we have over 100 volunteers who show up week in and week out. And they don't only do it to help the people we serve, but because they also get so much out of it themselves.

So if you want to not only give back but get some joy back in return, get in touch. We'd love to have you join the team.

Food has always been about more than eating. It’s about people, connection, and community.

That’s why we’re proud to work with organisations like Evergreen Care Trust, Inspire+ and Mindspace to support people beyond our doors.

From home meal deliveries and children’s holiday food programmes to cooking courses that bring people together, we’re passionate about making a difference where we can.

Because food is just the start.

It's Volunteers' Week and here at Second Helpings we're celebrating all the many and varied reasons people decide to start volunteering:

✅ To 'give back' to society
✅ To be part of a team
✅ To get out of the house
✅ To put valuable skills to work after a career
✅ To gain new valuable skills
✅ To meet like-minded people
✅ To meet different people
✅ To feel connected to your community

These are some of the reasons people come to volunteer with us. If you'd like to find out more about working with us, helping to fight food waste and getting food out into the community rather than sending it to landfill, come and see us at the Volunteer Fayre at Stamford Library for a chat.

It's National Volunteers’ Week.

And a huge thank you to every volunteer at Second Helpings, you are the reason this works.

From collecting surplus food, to sorting, cooking, serving, and stocking the Community Fridge… you give your time to make sure good food doesn’t go to waste, and reaches people in our community with dignity.

It’s not just support. It’s the engine behind everything we do.

We see it every week. But this week, we’re saying it clearly.

Thank you.

This is where it starts.

Every week, we collect surplus food from local suppliers, food that would otherwise go to waste.

We sort it. We store it safely. And we make sure it gets used.
Nothing is wasted if it can still do good.
