🚘 THE CORTINA WAS ONE OF BRITAIN'S BIGGEST SUCCESS STORIES 🚘

But in the summer of 1968, something brought Ford Dagenham's production lines to a grinding halt...

187 women.

Ford's Dagenham factory was an industrial giant. Tens of thousands of people worked there, producing some of Britain's most recognisable cars β€” including the hugely popular Ford Cortina, which had been built at Dagenham since 1962.

Then, on 7 June 1968, 187 women sewing machinists walked out.

Their job?

Making the seat covers that went into those cars.

Their grievance?

They had been classified as "unskilled" workers, despite arguing that their work required considerable skill and experience. They were placed in a lower grade than comparable male workers.

And suddenly...

No women.
No seat covers.
No seat covers.
No cars.

The sewing machines stopped.

The production lines stopped.

And the mighty Ford Motor Company had a problem.

The strike lasted around three weeks and brought Ford's British production to a standstill. What had begun as a dispute over job grading had become a national story β€” one that would eventually help pave the way for the Equal Pay Act 1970.

It is an extraordinary story of industrial power, family life, workplace solidarity and women who discovered that sometimes the smallest cog can stop the biggest machine.

And now, you can see their story brought to the stage.

🎭 STAMFORD COLLEGE PLAYERS PRESENT

MADE IN DAGENHAM

A musical based on the extraordinary true story of the women who took on Ford β€” and refused to be ignored.

The Cortina may have been the car that got Britain moving...

But it was 187 women who showed what could happen when the people making it stopped.

πŸš— MADE IN DAGENHAM

The strike that stopped the line.
The women who started a movement.

πŸͺ‘ THEY WEREN’T ASKING FOR SPECIAL TREATMENT πŸͺ‘

THEY WERE ASKING TO BE TREATED FAIRLY βš–οΈ

June 1968.

At Ford’s factory in Dagenham, 187 women sewing machinists walked out.

Their jobs had been classified as less skilled than comparable work carried out by men β€” despite the skill, experience and precision their jobs demanded.

So they stopped.

And suddenly, Ford Motor Company had a problem.

No seat covers meant no finished cars.

What started as a dispute over job grading became something much bigger: a battle about women’s worth, women’s voices and women’s right to be recognised as equal.

The women had the backing of their unions. Trades Union Congress (TUC) Their fight reached the heart of government. Their action helped inspire a wider campaign for women’s equal rights, including the 1969 Equal Pay demonstration organised by women trade unionists. The pressure helped pave the way for the Equal Pay Act of 1970.

But here’s the thing…

The story didn’t end in 1970.

The law changed. Attitudes changed. Opportunities changed.

But the conversation about equality didn’t disappear.

In 2025, the UK gender pay gap among full-time employees was still 6.9%.

So when we tell the story of the women of Dagenham, we aren’t simply looking back.

We’re asking ourselves:

How far have we really come?

And what happens when ordinary people decide that enough is enough?

🎭 STAMFORD COLLEGE PLAYERS PRESENT…

A story of courage.
A story of solidarity.
A story of women who refused to be ignored.

They found their voices.
They stood together.
And they changed history.

The question is…

What would you stand up for?

πŸ“£ STAND UP!! πŸ“£

They were told to know their place. They decided to change the world.

In 1968, the women of Ford’s Dagenham factory stood up against injustice, demanding equal pay and refusing to let their voices be ignored.

Their fight for fairness, dignity and recognition changed the course of British history. But their message still resonates today.

Because when women stand together, speak out and demand to be heard, change happens.

✊ Their fight. Their voices. Our history. Our reminder.
