Our little Wombles of Settle - aka our Settle Primary group - have been hard at work litter picking!

Across all our groups, we help our young people understand how to care for our planet - whether that's by keeping parks clean, planting and gardening, or recycling ♻️

These kinds of activities also show our children the importance of contributing to their communities ❤️

The Government has announced a social media ban for under-16s - here's our response.

Emma Pears, SELFA's chief officer, says:

“The social media ban for under-16s is a positive step. We see so many young people struggling with their self-confidence, mental health and wellbeing as a result of the pressures they face online.

"Reducing exposure to harmful content and unhealthy comparisons can help create a safer environment for children to grow and develop.

"But this must be accompanied by education, support for families and greater responsibility from social media platforms to ensure young people are protected both online and offline.”

We're happy to respond to media/press requests: [email protected].

We love going on exciting trips, but sometimes, we just like to take it slow 🐌

At Springboard last week, our members pottered around the garden in the sunshine, and admired the beautiful summer (nearly!) flowers.

We celebrated Scott, Luke and Sophie’s June birthdays with cake 🎂 and did some drawing and crafts.

Slow, steady and relaxing – the perfect kind of day! ☀️🌷🌻

Our own research has shown that young LGBTQ+ people in Craven and North Yorkshire experience heightened stigma.

One individual told us it was easier to “pretend I'm not who I really am as it is easier for my mental health than being bullied”.

Across the UK, LGBTQ+ young people are twice as likely to experience poor mental health than their peers.

And, just less than half (43%) of LGBTQ+ pupils in the UK are bullied because of their identity.

This Pride, we're shining a light on the challenges LGBTQ+ youth face, why inclusion is so important, and what we do to make sure all of our members can be themselves 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Creating an inclusive environment also means thinking carefully about the language we use and how we communicate 👋

This week, our staff began Makaton training to help us communicate more effectively with children and young people who may benefit from using signs and symbols alongside speech.

We're excited to put our new skills into practice and continue making SELFA a place where everyone feels welcomed, understood and included ⭐

💡 What is Makaton? 💡

Makaton is a communication programme that combines speech, signing, and symbols to help those with learning or communication difficulties. Makaton is a visual way to develop communication skills and it is increasingly used in early-years settings like daycares.

Makaton has adapted a number of British Sign Language signs, but uses them alongside spoken English and symbols in English word order.

👋 To say "hello" in Makaton, hold your dominant hand flat with your palm facing out, placed at shoulder height, and make a small, circular movement in the air or a slight wave. Always say the word "hello" out loud at the same time!

Around 10% of the young people we support are young carers 💚

On Carers Week, we're celebrating these incredible young people and the work they do caring for parents, siblings, or other family members who need support due to illness, disability, or other circumstances beyond their control.

Alongside school and growing up, many also take on responsibilities at home - like shopping, household chores and caring for siblings.

At SELFA, we recognise the challenges young carers face and are here to support them.

Whether it's offering a safe space to talk, helping them connect with others who understand, or providing fun activities and trips where they can simply have fun, our groups and activities make a big difference to their lives.

⭐ What we offer at SELFA ⭐

We provide activities for children and young people from school age up to 18, or up to 25 for those with SEND. Eligible participants either live or attend school in North Yorkshire, or are registered with a GP practice in Craven.
