SWEDA SWEDA
Providing support to anyone affected by eating disorders in the South and West.

Having an eating disorder, or supporting someone who has, can be a distressing and bewildering experience. Somerset and Wessex Eating Disorders Association (SWEDA) offers a range of services throughout Somerset and the surrounding area. Based at Shepton Mallet in Somerset, in the Southwest of England (UK), we provide support to anyone affected by eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulim

ia nervosa, compulsive eating, binge eating disorder and all related conditions. Our services include Counselling Services, a monthly Self help Support Group, Training and Presentations for Health Professionals and GPs, and an Outreach and Community Support programme, working with young people in Secondary Schools and four of the major Colleges in the county. We are here to support and listen to you, wherever you are on your journey.

“I now eat with confidence and no fear.” 🌈

We loved this short testimonial from one of our Bristol clients, showing just how far they’ve come in their recovery journey. There is always hope for recovery, for anyone, no matter how hard things may seem right now. Thank you to the client who shared this part of their story with us!

What happens when you put your phone away for a couple of hours... you get to enjoy a fantastic screen free quiz night supporting SWEDA! 😊

A huge thank you to the team at The Digital Detox Club for organising a brilliant event at The Den Cafe in Bath on Thursday night. Our fundraising manager Gavin had a great time hosting the quiz and we would like to thank everyone involved for choosing to support SWEDA.

Thank you also to all of those who donated to our raffle. It was a nostalgic quiz that reminded people there was life before endless scrolling and AI.

For the those who missed it, keep an eye on our socials for hopefully another Screen Free Quiz night in the future.

This time a year ago, Mark and Emma put on their hiking boots and embarked on a massive journey in aid of SWEDA 🥾🌈

Inspired by the support they had received from us in 2020, they managed to raise over £5,000 for SWEDA from over 60 supporters, enabling us to be there for more families and individuals affected by eating disorders.

If Mark and Emma’s story has inspired you to reach out for support, you can find out more about how we can help families by getting in touch with us: www.swedauk.org/contact-us

Or if you feel inspired to help other families affected by eating disorders, you can find out about supporting our work on our fundraising page. Visit www.swedauk.org/support-us/fundraising to start your journey. (Don’t worry - you don’t have to walk the width of Spain!).

Anybody can be living with an eating disorder. Not everybody feels able to reach out for the help they need.

Research suggests that 1 in 4 people affected by EDs are male 🙇🏻‍♂️ But, owing to stigma around masculinity and mental health, men & boys sometimes face additional internal barriers to reaching out for the support that can empower recovery.

That’s why our educational outreach is so important, so we can challenge misconceptions and reach the people who are struggling in silence.
But as a charity, we need the support of our community to keep going. Can you help us?

We’re asking our SWEDA Community to consider donating – even just an hour’s wage – on a monthly basis so we know we can keep our vital work going.

Set up your donation by visiting swedauk.org and clicking 'donate' 🌈

📚️Level 6 Certificate in Working with Eating Disorders 📚️

SWEDA is very excited to share that we have written and developed a qualification for counsellors and psychotherapists who would like to work safely with eating disorders.

Our Level 6 Certificate in Working with Eating Disorders is accredited by CPCAB under their tailor-made scheme. The focus is on developing knowledgeable therapists working safely and compassionately with clients with eating disorders. This is a specialist area and we are very keen to ensure people can access appropriate training.

Here’s our first cohort getting started with the learning sessions. We will be running this course again in January 2027.

If you’re navigating exams this month, here’s a reminder of some self-soothing exercises you can use when you’re feeling stressed 🧘🌿

If you’re finding things really tough, remember to reach out to friends, family, or a teacher – don’t suffer in silence or let anxiety get worse. You deserve support.

Earlier this month we shared some more tips on coping with exam stress. Have a look back through our profile to give that post a read.

Your story could inspire somebody to reach out and start their own recovery journey.

If you’ve received support from SWEDA, or if you have your own recovery journey you’d like to share, there’s lots of ways to tell your story:

💬 Chat to your SWEDA Support Worker or Counsellor about writing about the impact your sessions have had on your journey

🌈 Take part in our project – paint a picture, write a poem, or a short essay on what the word ‘recovery’ really means for you. Visit our website for more info: https://swedauk.org/blogs/what-recovery-means-to-me.

📩 Drop us an email at [email protected] if you’d like to explore other options, like writing for our blog, collaborating with us on socials, or sharing your story on the local radio. Your ideas are very welcome!
