Another productive volunteering session down at Seaford Station today maintaining the planters, today’s jobs were watering weeding, pruning and painting 👨‍🎨

A special thank you to our volunteer Anne for all the extra watering and gardening she does at the station on top of our normal sessions 💚

The Armeria maritima (thrift) varieties are looking particularly good at the moment with beautiful pink and white flowers on display.

It was a real pleasure to speak this morning to the Friends of Bishopstone Station about gardening for bees and pollinators.

We explored how simple planting choices can dramatically increase nectar and pollen availability throughout the seasons, why flower shape and structure matter, and practical ways to support pollinators through thoughtful plant selection, extended flowering periods and creating shelter and nesting opportunities.

It was a real pleasure to speak to Seaford and District Horticultural Society last night about climate resilient planting.

I spoke about predictions of more frequent periods of drought, wetter and warmer winters, shifting seasons and more extreme weather events, how these patterns have already affected us over the past 30 years, and how they are likely to shape the next 30 years. Most importantly, we explored what we can do as gardeners to adapt, from the choices we make in plant selection to how and where we source our plants for long term resilience.

🌟Gardening has been widely recognized as an effective way to manage stress and promote emotional well-being. 🌱

🌿Nurturing plants and spending time outdoors allows individuals to slow down, focus on the present moment, and disconnect from daily pressures.

🌞Engaging with nature can lower cortisol levels—the body’s primary stress hormone—while also improving mood and concentration.

🌳The physical activity involved in digging, planting, and weeding releases endorphins, further enhancing relaxation and satisfaction.

Beyond its physical benefits, gardening fosters a sense of accomplishment and connection to the natural world, making it a simple yet powerful tool for reducing stress and supporting .🧠

Now you know why are such happy people. 🍃
