If you haven't seen the People's Emergency Briefing yet, you can watch it at The Workshop in Folkestone next Thursday 29th October.

Hear from scientists and experts about what climate change could mean for our future, how communities can adapt, and why there's still reason for hope.
Stay afterwards for a discussion about what these issues mean for the Folkestone area and how we can respond locally.

What could climate change and nature loss mean for us here in Folkestone?

On Thursday 29 October at 7pm, we're hosting a free community screening of The People's Emergency Briefing at The Workshop.

It's a 50-minute film bringing together evidence from leading UK scientists, looking at how climate change and nature loss could affect everyday life in the UK.

Afterwards, there'll be an opportunity to sit down together and talk about what it all means for Folkestone.

The evening has been organised by one of our members, Ralph Legg, and we'd love to welcome people from across the local community.

You don't need to be a Workshop member to attend, and everyone aged 16+ is welcome.

Places are limited, so please register in advance. You can also watch the film's trailer on our website.

702 pieces of litter removed from Sandgate Beach! ♻️🌊

A huge thank you to the 35 wonderful volunteers of all ages, who joined Sandgate Environmental Action's beach clean in support of the Marine Conservation Society.

Together, volunteers helped remove litter from Sandgate Beach, making a real difference to our local coastline. After all that hard work, everyone enjoyed some well-earned refreshments and the chance to catch up with fellow volunteers.

The results show why these events matter. A total of 702 pieces of rubbish were collected from eight 100-metre stretches of beach, with plastic and polystyrene making up the largest proportion of the litter found.

Thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help protect our marine environment. Every piece collected is one less piece that could harm wildlife or enter the sea. 💙

🐝 Nature's Master of Disguise!

This incredible Hornet Mimic Hoverfly was spotted in Sandgate this week by one of our Sandgate Watch wildlife recorders.

At first glance it looks like a hornet, but don't worry, it's completely harmless. Like all hoverflies, it can't sting. Its bold yellow and brown stripes are simply clever camouflage to protect it from hungry birds!

The larvae of this hoverfly live happily inside the nests of social wasps without getting stung. They feed on the debris and rubbish that builds up in the nest, giving the wasps a free cleaning service in return!

As adults, hoverflies are also important pollinators of a wide variety of plants.

🌿 Want to help us discover more amazing wildlife in Sandgate?

🦋 Take part in the Big Butterfly Count! 🦋

Butterflies are one of the best indicators of the health of our environment, and you can help protect them by taking part in the Big Butterfly Count 2026.

Between 17 July and 9 August, simply spend 15 minutes in a sunny spot counting the butterflies (and day-flying moths) you see. You can do it in your own garden or explore one of Sandgate's wonderful green spaces, such as the Recreation ground or Enbrook Park.

Every count helps scientists understand how our butterflies are faring and provides valuable information for conservation.

🦋 Find out more, download a free butterfly identification chart and submit your sightings here:

🌼 Will you spot a lovely Painted Lady like this one, which is often sighted in Sandgate, or perhaps something even rarer?

Let us know what you find in the comments and share your butterfly photos – we'd love to see what's fluttering around Sandgate! 🦋💚

🌳🎶 Sandgate Environmental Action is proud to be part of Treeline! 🎶🌳

We're excited to be taking part in Treeline, an inspiring creative musical project devised by composer Graham Fitkin, connecting communities with their trees and forests through music, field recordings, data collection and live performances. The project aims to inspire a deeper appreciation of trees, biodiversity and the natural world.

Graham is travelling an incredible 2,500 miles across Europe by bicycle, performing concerts at 20 locations along the way – and we're thrilled that Folkestone is one of them!

As part of the project, local environmental groups have been invited to create sections of a beautiful tree installation, which will be displayed in the windows of The Grand ahead of the concert. Our contribution celebrates two of SEA's projects: Wild About Sandgate and Sandgate Watch. 🌿💚

If you'd like to experience this unique event on 18th July, you can book tickets at https://www.soundsfolkestone.co.uk/events/treelines-graham-fitkin-composer-sacconi-quartet/
