Rugby Heritage Lions Club is delighted to announce that we have been awarded ÂŁ500 by the Asda Foundation in recognition of our work in the community.

This will enable us to offer our Festive Tea for local seniors this Christmas. It was a great success last year and contributed to the award.

Seen here are Club Secretary, Jan Watson and Asda Customer and Community Champion, Gemma Bowers with a very impressive cheque.

8th October is World Sight Day and Rugby Heritage Lions were out in Rugby Town Centre to talk to passers by, highlight the range of services that Lions offer in support of eye health and draw attention to the challenges of visual impairment.

Lions Ian Mills, Jan Watson, Ralph Watson and Tony Moore were joined by guide dogs Nadia and ZaZa, along with their human friends.

High point of the day was when the Mayor of Rugby who donned a blindfold and then took a walk around the shopping area, guided by Ralph Watson, to highlight the challenges faced by blind people in doing even simple things like visiting the shops or going for coffee.

Also showcased was the new Vision Screening camera that is already proving to be amazingly effective in screening young children for potential vision challenges. Rugby Heritage Lions will be bringing this to the attention of Rugby schools over the coming months.

An excellent day out and huge thanks to everyone who came to chat.

On 8th October, Rugby Heritage Lions will be present in Rugby Town centre with a sight-oriented display, including the revolutionary vision screening camera and the Mayor of Rugby will be taking a tour of the town centre whilst blindfolded and guided by one of our members to highlight the challenges faced by visually impaired people in everyday tasks like shopping or going for coffee with friends.

We will also have a spectacle collection point for you to bring your old specs and sunglasses, which we recycle to help give the gift of sight to those in need and save the environment.

If you’re in Rugby, come and say hi. If you manage one of the opticians in the town centre abd would like to Mayor to drop in for a photo with you, please contact us as soon as possible to arrange.

There can be no doubt that cancer is devastating, not only to the sufferer but also their family and friends.

That’s why Lions do all that we can to help organisations like Marie Curie continue to provide such caring support.

This weekend, a team from Rugby Heritage Lions, along with volunteers and, of course our dynamo of a club mascot, Jamey, were out collecting in the Rugby branch of .

Not sure if it was the hats but the passing customers were extremely generous with their donations. Thank you all.

Helping and supporting youth activities are high in the priorities of Rugby Heritage Lions so it was great pleasure to visit Brooke School in Rugby where Club Secretary Jan Watson presented some special books as an addition to the library.

So, who ARE Rugby Heritage Lions?

Well, we are a social group of friends who come together to have fun at the same time as doing our best to help others in the Rugby community – and beyond. We do this by getting involved in activities such as helping out at charity events, supporting and feeding those who need some help, providing marshals and stewards at events such as Rugby Spring Fair and local Young Farmer events. We support the young by donating books to schools, helping with environment projects and challenging school teams in competitions. We set up fund raising events to help local and international causes.

You might see us in big yellow hats when we collect for Marie Curie of buy a poppy from us. You might also just spot our Lions pin when in the pub or having a bite out. Just watch for that famous Lions logo.

If you do, come and say hi. We may be Lions but we don’t bite and we are always happy to welcome new folks along to volunteer with us or drop in at one of our social meets.

If YOU would like to make new friends, have some fun and give up an hour or two here and there, why not get in touch? Hey, come along with a few of your friends and make the party bigger.
