Railway Mission

Railway Mission The work of the Chaplains compliments that of the welfare services offered by employers. Chaplains are here to listen in times of need and in times of joy.

We are Railway Mission, a group of specially trained people who offer friendship and a listening ear to anyone connected with our nation’s railways. We’re a Christian charity offering help to everyone.

We are delighted that our former colleague, Reverend Christopher Henley, was awarded the British Empire Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours for his services to the South Western Railway Network.

This is a wonderful and richly deserved recognition of Christopher’s many years of faithful service as a Railway Mission chaplain. Through his quiet presence, compassionate listening and practical support, Christopher has demonstrated the love of Christ to countless people across the railway community.

I hope you will join us in congratulating Christopher.

Reminder: Gresley 150 - Your Invitation to the Service of Celebration

Our Railway Mission Chaplains Frances Roscoe and Colin Fraser will be leading a service for the London North Eastern Railway in the historic surroundings of Doncaster Minster on Thursday 18 June at 6pm.

The special Service of Celebration is part of Gresley 150 - marking 150 years since the birth of Sir Nigel Gresley, one of Britain’s greatest railway engineers. The service will last approximately 50 minutes and will reflect on Gresley’s extraordinary legacy and the lasting impact his work continues to have on Britain’s railways today.

The service is designed to be welcoming and accessible to all and is open to everyone, regardless of faith or background. Refreshments will follow the service, offering a chance to continue the celebration and conversation together.

LNER are encouraging colleagues, partners, railway enthusiasts and members of the community join them for what promises to be a thoughtful and memorable evening.

Please register in advance to help with planning ➡️ https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/gresley-150-service-of-celebration-tickets-1990480277091?aff=oddtdtcreato

Learning about the job on the job

It's important for our Railway Mission Chaplains to develop a strong understanding of what the many roles on the railways involve. That understanding helps us learn how best to support each member of our railway family during times of difficulty.

Mags Farrow is our Railway Mission Chaplain for South Wales and the Marches. She is new to railways but not to chaplaincy and she has been busy visiting signallers in her area.

She was delighted to have the opportunity to spend a morning visiting Clarbeston Road Signal box recently with signaller Elliott and his Local Operations Manager, Scott Brockway.

She saw how busy an end of line signal box could be, as Network Rail staff came by to do line walks and as a speed restriction was put in place due to assessment of the track following a driver's report of an issue. She even got a look inside the token machine whilst it was being cleaned.

Our chaplains might not all be railway enthusiasts but they are all enthusiastic about railways.

It's a pleasure to get behind the scenes and gain a deeper understanding of what day to day life involves for railway staff and contractors. Thank you for the invites!

Mental wellbeing - learn skills and tools for yourself and your team

Join our sister organisation, Paideia Coaching, for a half-day mental health resilience training courses in Leeds on 10 September or London on 17 September.

Endorsed by the CIRO | Chartered Institution of Railway Operators, the training is specifically designed to strengthen mental health resilience. It gives participants the tools to recognise when they or others are struggling and to identify support and solutions to address difficulties.

The course covers:

⭐ How you can recognise the signs of burnout and stress in yourself and others.

⭐ Understanding workplace and home-related stressors and how they impact wellbeing.

⭐ Building confidence to have open, supportive conversations about mental health.

⭐ Equipping you with tools and strategies to look after you own wellbeing and to support colleagues.

Our open courses are perfect for Individuals or small numbers of staff who also want to learn alongside peers from across the rail industry, gaining wider perspectives and shared experiences. Staff benefit from a neutral, external environment, which can encourage more open discussion around wellbeing and resilience.

For more information please visit https://paideiacoaching.co.uk/next-courses or email Andy Mitchell [email protected].

We can also deliver this course at your own venue to groups of 15 to 18 participants.

Charity Hike for Railway Mission

This Friday 12 June, the wonderful team at CIRO | Chartered Institution of Railway Operators are undertaking a challenge to raise vital funds to support our work.

We are delighted to be the chosen charity for their 16-mile hike around Mam Tor. The route will cover Castleton → Mam Tor → Great Ridge → Win Hill → Ladybower → Castleton.

They are hoping to raise at least £750 and every one of those miles and pounds will make a huge difference to our work providing mental health and emotional support to everyone in the railway family.

You can support the challenge by visiting: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/cirocharitychallange

Best of luck to the CIRO team. It's a stunning walk and we are so grateful to everyone who supports them and their fundraising efforts!

A story of kindness

It's always wonderful to receive an act of kindness and this happened recently to Hannah Tuck. Hannah is a former Railway Mission Chaplain - in fact she was our youngest ever chaplain aged just 19!

She says: "I was in Pugh's garden centre...while I was at the till a man in the queue recognised me from working on the railway and he paid for my shopping! He was so grateful for the chaplains and he works on the railway still."

It's heartwarming to hear stories like these about how our chaplains have touched the lives of those we support.

If you have a story to share, we would love to hear from you.

Thank you Hannah for sharing this wonderful story.

Meet Andy - our mental health resilience trainer

Andy Mitchell leads our new mental health resiliance training courses, run through our sister organisation Paideia Coaching.

Andy has received exceptional feedback from the courses to date and a great coach is key to getting the most from any training. His experience includes:

- Working alongside teams and individuals in IT and telecommunications to strengthen capability, confidence, and performance. He has supported learning in complex and high‑pressure organisational environments.

- Working with job seekers to help them develop transferable skills, resilience, and work readiness.

- Overseeing a local community initiative focused on wellbeing and engagement, bringing local people together.

The training is delivered face-to-face with Andy building a really safe and supportive learning environment with a trust-based discussion of sensitive topics. It's very interactive and practical with time for reflection and a focus on useful tools and approaches to help in real life situations.

Don't just take our word for it - here are some of the comments from previous courses.

⭐ "Andy was fantastic in ensuring everyone was heard and got a chance to speak.”

⭐ “Andy was a lovely chap. Clearly holds excellent experience in the field.”

⭐ “Andy kept the session very conversational. It helped for sharing ideas.”
