Lovely to see lots of Friends of Watts Meadow in the woods this morning. I lost count - maybe 40 people, or more? Lots of families - tea and cakes were welcome, and those who found all the eggs were rewarded with chocolate bunnies.

Watts Meadow looking gorgeous in the sunshine - so many insects taking advantage of the early flowers. I saw 7 kinds of butterfly during a walk today, and 11 types of bird (I was doing a report for the BTO birds in greenspaces survey, and will write a blog post on this soon. Please do take a look https://www.bto.org/get-involved/volunteer/projects/greenspaces/taking-part if you'd like to take part)

The new path across the upper part of Watts Meadow is now complete - meaning there is a smooth surface now across and between both parts of the site, from Ethelbert Road, or Fort Clarence, across the top part, then down the slope between tennis counrt and allotments, joining up with Pat Wilson way.

Part of getting to know our neighbours includes our local community police officers. We had a good chat and walked around the meadow with them today (Thursday).

If you saw us, there is nothing to worry about, they were not responding to any incidents.

We've discovered quite late in the day that the path from Ethelbert Road at the top of Watts Meadow is having an upgrade with a new surface.

There is no access from Ethelbert or the side of the tennis club but we believe you can still go along by the bowls club... It may be closed for a few weeks and we will post updates when we have them.

Also, to follow up the previous post - one of the ways trees in Watts Meadow can be managed is by coppicing (see recent post which linked to our blog post on this). The council team were busy last week, and another stretch has been cleared. It will be interesting to see what grows next.

Interesting to read this overview of research from The Forestry Commission which explored what people feel about dead and decaying trees in the landscape:https://cdn.forestresearch.gov.uk/2025/06/25_0008_Tech-Pub_In-Brief_Dead-and-decaying-trees_Acc.pdf Most of the trees in Watts Meadow were self seeded, and none can be over c70 years (previously the site was allotments, and before then, just open fields) they haven't been managed, and many are reaching the natural end of their life. This report provides valuable information about how "the level of knowledge visitors holds* affects their values and attitudes". *about bidiversity, and environmental benefits

Lots of signs of spring spotted in the sunshine today. The leaves are almost a month earlier than last year, although I did spot crocus flower on 14 Feb, so those are just 10 days earlier. Also spotted evidence we did have wild iris flowering (I never found any flowers last year)
