Carbon monoxide (CO) is known as a ‘silent killer.' It is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas, so it’s difficult to detect, and the symptoms can often be similar to a flu or hangover.

With more time spent at home with less ventilation in the winter, it’s important to remain extra vigilant at this time of year. Make sure you fit a carbon monoxide alarm that alerts you to its presence, test it regularly and check the expiry date.

As we conclude and this year's theme 'Take No Chances,' we're celebrating the colleagues whose actions demonstrate exactly what that message means in practice.

👏 Congratulations to Lance Newhouse, Compliance Officer and former First Call Operative Engineer, who was recognised as one of our Cadent Gas Safety Heroes for 2026. 🎉

With his keen eye and years of experience, Lance was carrying out a routine inspection of a purge and relight operation at a church being undertaken by a third-party contractor. By checking qualifications and challenging assumptions, he identified that an engineer carrying out the work was not fully qualified. His actions helped prevent a potential breach of legislation and protected the safety of the engineer, the church community and everyone involved.

Congratulations to Lance and all our colleagues who go above and beyond to help keep homes, businesses and communities safe every day.
