The West Indian Women's Circle

The West Indian Women's Circle The West Indian Women's Circle is a Registered Charity working to improve the quality of life of Elders. The West Indian Women's Circle (W.I.W.C.) The W.I.W.C.

We have a particular interest in the needs of Carribean Elders living in our local community area of Reading. was founded in 1979 by a group of nurses who felt that the Black Minority Ethnic Groups (BME) were missing out on a whole range of socila welfare services. The BME Elders appeared to be overlooked by the statutory institutions although they were amongst the poorest and the most disadvantag

ed groups of the people in the community. This self helped Organisation was born out of the needs for the BME Community in the Greater Reading Area and set itself the task of providing a service to this special group. is commonly referred to as 'The Circle', a name that remembers how the organisation started. Meetings were held around a circular table in the kitchen of one of the founding members; Elsa Fenton. Over the years the W.I.W.C. has supported hundreds of individuals with issues from health, housing, leegal, welfare, arranging social and community events and linking community together with news, information, support, encouragement and opportunity. W.I.W.C. has benefited from the involvement of Healthcare Professionals, an ex-Mayor, Fundraisers, Homemakers, Office Managers, Community Workers, Drivers, Accountants, Musicians and many other backgrounds.
