Hyperactive ADHD is about much more than simply having lots of energy.
For some children, there is a persistent drive to move, talk, act or respond, with very little pause between the impulse and the action.
They may wriggle constantly, leave their seat, interrupt, struggle to wait, seek activity and find it incredibly difficult to slow their body and brain down — even when they are tired.
From the outside, that can sometimes be mistaken for poor behaviour, lack of boundaries or a child “just being lively”.
The important difference is the pattern, persistence and impact on everyday life. One energetic afternoon is not ADHD.
Understanding what is happening underneath the behaviour helps us respond with support, structure and realistic expectations rather than simply asking a child to “try harder” to be still.
