📸 RVPS Weekend Photography Challenge
🍂 SIGNS OF SEPTEMBER

September is here, and the seasons are beginning to change! 📷🍁

For this weekend's challenge, we'd like you to head out with your camera and look for those first little signs that summer is giving way to autumn.

👀 Look out for:

🍁 The first leaves beginning to change colour
🍄 Fungi appearing in woods and gardens
🫐 Berries and autumn fruits
🌾 Seed heads and fading wildflowers
🕸️ Dew-covered cobwebs
🌫️ Misty mornings
🌳 Changing landscapes
🚜 Harvest scenes
☀️ Softer September light
🐦 Seasonal wildlife

📷 The challenge: Capture an image that makes you think "September is here." It doesn't have to be an obvious autumn scene — sometimes the smallest details tell the best story.

✨ BONUS CHALLENGE: Can you find summer and autumn together in the same photograph? Perhaps a late summer flower surrounded by fallen leaves or green foliage alongside the first autumn colours.

📸 RVPS Weekend Photography Challenge
💧 AFTER THE RAIN
A bit of rain doesn't mean the camera has to stay at home! In fact, wet weather can completely transform an everyday scene. ☔📷
This weekend, we're challenging you to embrace the weather and capture After the Rain.
Keep your eyes open for:
💧 Raindrops clinging to flowers and leaves
🕸️ Droplets sparkling on spiderwebs
🌈 Colours that become richer when they're wet
🪞 Reflections in puddles
🌿 Fresh, rain-covered landscapes
☁️ Moody and dramatic skies
🏘️ Reflections on wet streets and cobbles
☔ Umbrellas and rainy-day moments
✨ Light reflecting from wet surfaces
📷 The challenge: Use the rain to make an ordinary subject more interesting. Think about reflections, textures, light and atmosphere rather than waiting for perfect weather.
🔄 BONUS CHALLENGE: Find a reflection in a puddle and experiment with turning your finished photograph upside down. You might be surprised by the result!
And remember — you don't necessarily have to photograph while it's raining. Sometimes the best opportunities appear just after it stops. 🌦️

A pre-dawn leopard call leads us straight to the dominant Tortoise Pan male patrolling and marking his territory — and by afternoon we're back with three small lion cubs, tucked into a riverbed and fighting for a feed.

📸 RVPS Weekend Photography Challenge
➡️ Leading Lines

It's Friday, which means it's time for another RVPS Weekend Photography Challenge! 📷

This weekend we're looking for LEADING LINES — one of the simplest but most effective ways to strengthen a composition.

Leading lines help guide the viewer's eye into and through your photograph, often drawing attention towards your main subject.

👀 Look out for:

🛤️ Paths, tracks and country lanes
🌉 Bridges and railings
🧱 Walls and fences
🌾 Rows in fields
🌳 Lines of trees
🏙️ Buildings and architecture
🌊 Rivers, shorelines and jetties
☀️ Shadows and patterns
🌀 Curves, spirals and lines found in nature

📷 The challenge: Don't just find a line — think about where it takes the viewer's eye and what you want them to discover at the end of it.

✨ Bonus challenge: Change your viewpoint! Get low, move to one side or try a symmetrical composition and see how dramatically it changes your photograph.

You don't need to travel far either — there are leading lines all around us once you start looking for them! 👀

Today we’re celebrating everything we love about photography — capturing moments, exploring new places, noticing the little details and sharing the world through our own eyes. ❤️

At Ribble Valley Photographic Society, photography is about so much more than taking a great picture. It’s about learning, experimenting, getting outdoors, meeting people and sharing a hobby with others who enjoy it just as much as you do.

Whether you shoot with the latest camera, an older favourite or simply your phone, today is the perfect excuse to get out and take a photo! 📷

This weekend, we're challenging you to look a little closer and capture the small details that tell the story of summer. 🌿📷

Rather than reaching for the big landscape, see what you can discover when you slow down and really look around.

Your inspiration could be:

🌾 Seed heads and summer grasses
🦋 Butterflies, bees and insects
🌸 Flowers beginning to fade
🍓 Berries and fruits
💧 Dew or raindrops
🌳 Dappled sunlight through the trees
🪵 Interesting natural textures
🌻 Little details in your garden
☀️ Or anything else that simply says summer to you!

📷 The challenge: Get closer than you normally would and think carefully about light, texture, colour and composition.

✨ Bonus challenge: Try photographing your subject from an unusual angle or using a shallow depth of field to turn an everyday detail into something special.

🏛️ PHOTO OPPORTUNITY | The Romans Take Over Brockholes! ⚔️📸
Looking for something a little different to photograph this August? The Brockholes Village Fete is being taken over by the Romans!
📍 Brockholes Nature Reserve
📅 Saturday 29th – Monday 31st August 2026
⏰ 10am – 4pm
The Roman Military Research Society will be bringing history to life with Roman fashion, architecture, cooking, weaponry and live combat demonstrations, alongside stalls, crafts, games and the usual village fete activities.
