Followers of this page will know how bloody useless Penrith Town Council Cumbria has shown itself to be. NO support for Fresh AIR for Penrith. NO extraordinary public council meeting to discuss Penrith 'pong' odour pollution. NO councillor ward surgeries.
NO action to stop the 'pong', just secret meetings with no community feedback.
Now, it has proven for all to see how bloody useless it really is.
£170,000 public purse Wayfinding signage ordered by Penrith Town Council, designed in London, manufactured in Middlesex was NOT proof read ! It was erected with spelling mistakes !

Reminder to all that currently....
* We do not have a single 'councillor' ( Westmorland and Furness Council) who lives in Penrith west or Castletown.
* We do not have a single 'councillor' who holds ward surgeries.
* We do not have a single 'councillor' working publicly and collabratively to end the 'pong' odour nuisance.
* OUR Penrith west/Castletown, councillors are 'missing'.
* Through their lack of action and support, they have made themselves part of the problem, not part of the solution.

EDITORIAL EDITORIAL
While we would ALL like the 'pong' to have stopped, it hasn't ! The solution is a long and complicated one, from the streets of Castletown to the High Court, (boring non productive) council meetings to the floor of the House of Commons.
Hours and hours of time, effort, resources have gone into the campaign. That's achieved.....'formal' acknowkedgement there is a 'pong'; recognition it is a nuisance; a place on the national stage; acceptance of the need for a solution.
Along the way the campaign has faced major obstacles and opposition, even threats and intimidation. Only the closest followers/supporters will understand this.
Now, 2026 the campaign is at it's highest profile level, with media, the community and MP support. (NO councils or councillors public help).
The 2027 council and mayoral elections offer the opportunity to reach a new level ..... committment to a non-political party consensus at local, town, county level.

Early in it's campaign, Fresh AIR for Penrith raised a few hundred£££s through Crowdfunder. Since then, the campaign has received no financial support. No council grants, no Penrith Lottery money (lottery application for public awareness campaign was rejected), no industry sponsorship etc.
The campaign is wholly funded (flyers, public meeting venue hire, pr, media releases, time and any expenses eg: travel, car parking etc for council meetings) from the personal pocket of the campaign administrator.
(There is no space reserved for Fresh AIR for Penrith at the Westmorland and Furness Council 'freebie' Penrith town hall car park !).
This while other groups, events and organisations, receive support and generous public purse funding from multiple sources. Conclusion, there is a lack of desire to end the 'pong' by local councils, councillors and their cohorts in the Penrith 'establishment'. They content to ignore the problem facing residents, their health & wellbeing, and the local environment. JT admin

Delighted to say had positive get together with Mike Starkie for Mayor of Cumbria. Covered lots of ground and await his formal statement on the Penrith 'pong'. It is important for a solution, that party politics is set aside in the goal to achieve a 'pong' free Penrith. JT admin

2027 will be a crucial year, hopefully the last year !
Newspaper cutting below from mid-1970s (kindly supplied by follower).
2026 the story continues, continues to make media headlines !
During the first eight months of 2026, 1733 odour reports were received by the Environment Agency from the Penrith area.
The vast majority (circa 1200) cited Omega Proteins as a 'source' of the odour (source: EA FoI). Other quoted 'sources' included the Flusco landfuill site.
May 2027 brings democratic elections for ALL Cumbria's council seats. That includes Westmorland and Furness Council and Penrith Town Council Cumbria. These councils, and the majority of their councillors, have given NO support to 'end' the 'pong'. Some have even opposed the campaign !
They have allowed industrial planning applications and industry expansions to continue on the west side of Penrith (Penrith Business Parks, Wildriggs, Gilwilly etc), without community consultation or consideration for the environment, residents health & wellbeing.
May 2027 also brings the first Cumbria mayoral election.
Fresh AIR for Penrith is in contact with three of the leading mayoral contenders.....Lib Dem, Labour, Conservative. And, is lined-up for direct contact with the Reform candidate once he/she is announced. (Green party has not responded to request).
Each mayoral candidate will be provided with background....odour report figures, direct quotes from people affected by the 'pong', other background material etc.
Fresh AIR for Penrith will ensure the Penrith 'pong' and the need for a 'solution' are on the mayoral agenda ! ! !
This follows direct, regular contact with constituency MP, Markus Campbell Savours. He has already committed to a finding a solution to 'end' the 'pong'.
The majority of current 'councillors', however, continue to remain uncommitted, unresponsive and basically 'bloody useless' !
That's why in May 2027, residents/council taxpayers, MUST vote for councillor candidates committed to ending the 'pong' and bringing 'fresh air' back to Penrith. No more 'pong' air !
Penrith needs an MP, mayor and councillors, who will work together with residents to end the odour nuisance which has blighted the town for years.
